There was a time not long ago when the company flooded the schedule with two-day hotel standbys and you couldn't drop anything.

You don't always have the ability to drop "at will." Depends on crew manning and whether someone is willing to pick up your trip if you profer it.

On the 767 at least, for the time being.
Last I heard Reserves aren’t flying too much either.

No right now it is very easy to drop trips because we are adequately manned in most seats. Open time is snatched up in a matter of minutes typically, at least in the 757. For folks who have only been here a few years while hiring has been robust and advancement has been rapid life has been pretty good and it may seem like you can just drop stuff whenever you want. That is true to a point, but the moment hiring slows down (which it may have already) and manning gets a little tighter that ability to drop a trip at will won't necessarily be there.
For now that means those on reserve aren't flying that much because most of the open trips are scarfed up by guys trying to consolidate or just make some extra money since our line values are a bit low these days.
