Nice broad brush.

As a long time long distance commuter that recently shortened it up to the standard MEM commute, I gotta wave the BS flag. Of the occasional long distance commuter that happens onto the jumpseat for one of my revenue flights, I find them consistently courteous and grateful.

No one in the industry but Fedex pilots complain about or far worse, deny jumpseaters from their OWN company, never mind off line guys because it's a little inconvenient. Pathetic. I've road the jumpseat and crewed flights on 737s with two jumpseaters in the cockpit that practically required the surgical removal of the pedestal at block in.

If your pu$$y hurts that bad having an extra body or two every now and then, my guess is that you're the problem child, not them. If they're really that "inconsiderate", then man up and educate them on whatever their problem is. We've got a lot of new blood showing up and we can nip that problem in the bud early if it really exists.

I'm still trying to figure what "road" I need to take to jumpseat on the 737?

I do agree we shouldn't ever have pilots bumped. However, IMHO, we have an small etiquette problem. But, I think the captain can and should fix it when it happens. For example "hi, Im xxxxx, Im riding to Memphis with you" instead of " Hi captain, I'm xxxx could I possibly have a ride to Memphis?". I don't think its purposeful, I just think it's not drilled into us like pax carriers. If they aren't doing it on our a/c they probably aren't doing it offline either. Most long haul jumpseaters know the drill but we still have a few that don't. Just had one a couple of months ago, as a required crew(one of many) I had to ride in the back for the takeoff, when the jumpseater arrived, he moved my stuff because he wanted the seat I was in. When I said something, he ignored me. Clear verbiage tends to work well and did. All fixable issues. If on a 9 hour flight most know to stay clear, but if they keep getting in the way, tell them. It might be their first and haven't been briefed. Especially now since a great number don't have any sponsors/mentors to brief them. I agree many are very courteous but every offline jumpseater I have had has asked. Ours, at least once a
week of work doesn't. Again, IMHO, our small problem, ours to fix, each time it happens.

In 6+ years I have yet to see a jumpseater not ask, be in the way, or be discourteous. Understand that's not 20 years+ career, but still.

I agree with Adlerdriver.

1 - I wasn't the one using generalities, disparaging our entire commuting crew force based on isolated happenings involving a few bad actors.

2 - I know it's difficult to imagine, but some of us have experiences at other airlines in other aircraft. There's also a major airline serving our northernmost domicile that operates nothing but 737s. It can't be that difficult to imagine a scenario in which a commuter finds themselves on their jumpseat.
