Obviously reciprocals of headings <180 are fairly easy in your head. You’re merely adding 180. But this trick makes >180 - where you have to subtract 180 - much easier.
I found it easier to memorize the reciprocals than do math with ATC yelling in one ear and the engine fire bell in the other.

You only need to memorize increments of ten, the ones digit is obviously always the same for the recip.

Maybe a good idea with an arc-HSI, but why memorize anything with a regular CDI/HSI/HI as found in most GA aircraft?

The less brain-processing IMO, the better.

The chart I posted on the previous page can be on a kneeboard and held up/overlayed (or imagined) and you just find which segment the outbound ends up and you instantly know your entry.

But alas, there are plenty of equally valid ways to do these things, it's more about what makes sense to the student and which one they can use repeatedly and reliably.

I (and most airline pilots) fly with the arc. You certainly have the choice of selecting a full-rose display if desired, but most of time the arc sector displays everything I'm actually interested in, recip bearings being the exception.
