Default Time/Compass turns in the SR-20

I am having a problem with time turns in the Cirrus SR-20. The main problem is figuring out where headings are in relation to my current heading. In the Cessna with "steam gauges" I could use the OBS on VOR to do just that, but in the cirrus with the Avidyne, I am left with just the compass during partial panel. With the compass I can only see 40 degrees to the right and left of my current heading which makes it hard to determine which way (right or left) is fastest to get to my desired heading and also how many degrees is it off of my current heading. Any tips to help me out? Thanks.

Current HDG +/- 180

For example:

On a HDG of 090, Gimme a right turn to 270
090 + 180 = 270

Doing that little computation will split the difference to help you determine a right or left turn. Draw it out, if need be. You will pick it up after doing it a few times, no worries. Good luck!

I suggest you start developing your own mental moving map. Ideally, you will be able to recognize your position in space based on your instrumentation. If you start now while still learning and practicing the basics of instrument flying, you'll be set for partial panel approaches and actual conditions.

Start by visualizing the compass rose, then mentally turn it to match your heading. Another trick is to remember that the numbers always get bigger when you turn right, and smaller going left until you cross North.
