Default Pilot Glut

Most of you are too young to remember but as recently as 15 years ago pilots were weeded out early on. If you were older than 30 the majors wouldn't hire you. There were strict vision and height to weight requirements. Almost everyone came from the military. They mostly only hired males. There was no such thing as a student loan for flight training. The interview included a full day or two of medical and psychological testing. Though these advances make it better for all it also opens the door wide to almost everyone and it seems that everyone is showing up and will continue to do so.

Default My Point ??

Well my point is that there are far more pilots in the well now that all those former limitations have been lifted. If you add the possibility of the FAA raising the age limit to 65 then you will have an overnight jump of an additional 14% more pilots.

Well it should be interesting to anyone who is currently in training to become a professional pilot. In the 80's if you had 1000 of piston PIC and a few hours of Learjet time you were a hot prospect. Back then your odds of making it to a major were perhaps one in 3 for every commercial multi engine rated pilot. Now some have speculated that those odds are 25 to one. At the time it was easier to assess your odds by determining if you were within those tight qualifications. In the near future I would not be surprised if the majors will be looking for 2000 hours of 121 RJ pic in order to apply. If these kind of information is of no concern to you then sorry to have wasted your time.
