A new pilot wannabe isnt thinking about Frank Lorenzo (doubt he even knows who the guy is) or the busuiness side of aviation. THey are thinking about soaring above the clouds at mach .7. Lets keep it in perspective. You olde hands know the industry and a lot of you have become disgruntled. Dont ruin it for the young eager minds that dont know the industry. I am an airline pilot wannabee If I dont do that I may go into law enforcement flying or teach at a university. The oint is to have a plan and a backup plan. But I try to encourage everyone. That sdoesnt mean I blow sunshine. Of course you have to know the good wit hthe bad, but it seems on this site there is more talk about bad than good. ANd I know its not true based on my converstaions with actual major airline pilots.

When some dough-eyed kid asks "Should I become a pilot?" and you get an honest answer (as in HELL NO!) we're labeled disgruntled. To be clear, go learn to fly at an FBO enjoy that freedom when you can! As for WORKING as an AIRLINE PILOT, I'd rather see my kids become crack-*****s.

It is dangerous to get your information from crusty old major airline pilots.
"Actual" major airline pilots (the ones who are still working) I am sure have mostly only good things to say. They have lived through the last of the great times in aviation. Once they retire the door closes behind them. Those who follow will not have a similar experience.
Most of the negative energy comes from the next generation who knows how great it was and can see where the future is headed.

OK, I am no airline pilot. Not pretending to be one.
That said, I have not talked to any happy 121 pilots in person lately. The last one I talked to in detail had just quit a CRJ job and went to a Citation job---FOR THE TIME OFF!!! I had lunch with he and a retired major pilot. The contrast between the retired pilot's and the recent pilot's work environment and lifestyle was something.
I think many recent hire airline pilots are indeed disgruntled, and feel obligated to share the facts with people considering a flying career.
Flying at .7 is fun, but may not be enough if people are pondering the increasingly difficult "American Dream".
Flying is great, dont neglect the business facts of the job. If you proceed, best of luck to you and enjoy. LIKE YOU SAID, TAKE THE Good with the BAD.
