I have an opportunity through my university and another school to get a 737 type rating (discounted) for about $5500. I don't have an ATP yet. What do you guys think, would you do it? Will it look good/bad on my resume when I start applying to airlines?

It will be a waste of money, IMO.
Additional flight instructor ratings or multi-time would produce more value in terms of employment opportunity. Unless you're being offered a job contingent on having a type rating (i.e. SWA), I'd pass. If you do pursue the course, be aware that you'll have a PIC-restricted rating until you get IOE and at least 25 hours in type. So ask yourself, what good is a type rating that you can't use.

I agree with HSLD. I would also argue that it may look to some airlines as though you desire to work for SWA. Which is good if you are interviewing at SWA, but probably not as good if interviewing at American, e.g.
I make it a personal habit not to pay for training. Once you have your CFII or MEI, let the companies with the money pay for your training.

Seriously, use that money to rent a twin to build some twin time. Even if it is an expensive twin around 225/hr and you dont split it, you'll still be getting 25 hours. Split it and you'll have 50 hours. If you already have 50, that will put you at 100. 100 hours of multi is more likely to land you an airline job than 50 with a 737 SIC Type rating. Any airline that uses 737s will want some substantial time in the PIC Turbine time category. Therefore, if you are going airlines chances are you are going through the regionals. Get the multi time. Most people are getting hired right at 100 hours (102, 103, 101, 115 are hours Ive seen on these boards).

Thanks for the advise guys. Safe to say I won't be doing it now haha. I didn't realize how useless it was, but now it makes sense and I feel kinda stupid for even considering it. My school is trying to sell it completely differently, but that's their business I suppose.
