Hey guys, I am currently in the process of deciding on where I want to go to school. I will be a senior in HS this year and hold a PPL. I have visited and been accepted to KSU. The program seems excellent and I also know someone who goes there. However, the other two schools I am looking at are WMU and CWU. WMU seems like another excellent school. I am thinking of throwing CWU out of the picture. I love the location of CWU more than any of the other schools but I do not know how good the aviation program is. I believe the flight training is done through Midstate Aviation and I think I would prefer something done through the university.
Also, with the new airline 1500 hour requirement, what would your recommendation be for building the hours? I don't know if it seems reasonable to try to get my ratings before going to school and land a job before August 2013? I would be 19 years old.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I went to KSU, though that was back in '99-01. I enjoyed the program back then. Since you've visited Salina, you no doubt noticed it's a small town. I'm from SoCal, but I enjoyed living there.
One thing you might consider is the weather. No doubt the MI winter is brutal and I'm sure they have special procedures they follow, and KS has tough winters as well, but the KS nastiness probably won't last as long, which means you should be able to fly more out of the year. Just a thought. WMU is a very good school, however....they always whooped us at the SAFECON events.

MattE,
Great research on schools, I think you are definitely doing your homework! I attended WMU (if you couldn't catch on to the name, ha) and it was overall a very positive experience! The KingAirDriver is right about the weather, that will give you a challenge for sure! ha, come prepared for some interesting weather patterns that is for certain and some great weather experience. As for the other schools they are good. Do you foresee going the commercial airline route with your career? Or are you looking at more corporate or other avenues? I also know that WMU has many bridge agreements and at least one direct hire program operating currently (Pinnacle Airlines Direct Hire). Those bridge agreements and direct hire programs definitely help in job placement! They do all of their flight training themselves (not contracted out) in 26 Cirrus SR-20's with Avidyne R9 and DFC-90 autopilots.. So they have some nice equipment. They are starting to equip their twin's (Piper Seminole's) with glass as well I believe the Avidyne E1 system.
As for SAFECON, haha where is regionals & nationals at this upcoming year do you know perhaps? I didnt think KSU had a bad team! (if that means anything
).
Hope this input helps! I strongly recommend WMU, If you need contact information let me know!
Thanks!

Also, we're getting new G1000 Cessna's, an 80 million dollar building, and an all new CRJ and ATC simulator. Should be ready next fall!

I have quoted myself from another thread about where to go to school. I stand by this post!
If you're going to pay out of state tuition, go to Arizona State! I did not learn about his gem until it was too late. Phoenix is an awesome town and you're five hours from anywhere (Vegas, San Diego, Flagstaff, etc...). Enjoy 24/7 awesome weather, great partying and more hot girls than you can ever imagine! Chicks don't put on their winter coats and go into hiding during the winter...and you don't need sunglasses to look at them in the spring. One walk down Mill ave., at night, and you won't look back. Flip flops, sandals and Landshark all year round!
Get a degree is business or some other degree that may interest you. Look into nursing, i'm sure the ratio would be well in your favor. Go to a local airport and learn to fly at a Part 61 school and save $$$$$. Part 141 is way over rated! (I'm a 141 grad).
Or go to a sausage infested school full of dudes fighting over the 1 semi decent chick, trying to wow her with how awesome he is on flight team... Probably a chick you wouldn't even notice at ASU!
These are the ugly one!

Look i'm not going to be one of those guys that tries to talk you out of aviation. I love it and I have many buds who love it too. I also have friends who have moved on to other things because they can't stand being gone, low pay, $hitty work rules. So I will say, that if I had to to do all over again, I would get another degree, while flying outside of school.
Enjoy college for what it is, you have the rest of your life to worry about working. I would kill to be in your shoes and do college over again. I love my life now, but college was a blast!
Goodluck, and let us know what you decide!
In case you are still on the fence! Not ASU...close enough!

Thanks for the reply.
My other concern is the new 1,500 hour law that is coming into effect. What would be the best recommendation to go about getting the 1,500 hours required to become a regional pilot? Flight instructing? Seems like it would take quite a long time. Thanks.
