College Question
Well I'll be attending Western Michigan University starting this Fall and I will be majoring in aviation flight. At WMU they offer an Aviation floor where only Aviation students stay. However, after hearing from others, I have found that many people have had the best overall experience at another dorm. They have said that the non-aviation dorm is the best place for freshman to get to know other freshman and it is a good college experience. (This coming from people not studying aviation.) I would prefer to stay at the dorm that is not aviation specific but I don't want to underestimate the importance of staying on a floor with just aviation students. Just wondering what your take on this is? How important do you think it is to dorm with the aviation students?

You'll see the aviation majors in class every day, meet somewhere to study for exams, and probably even socialize in that "clique".
Go to a "regular" dorm and learn how to interact with the rest of the world - it will benefit you down the road in building interpersonal relationships. Much of the job market is not only qualifications, but networking.
As far as Aviation as a degree - use the search function on this site to see what lays ahead for you.

As has been mentioned, the "search" function would be able to fill you in on the overwhelming majority opinion on this forum concerning aviation as a degree...
As far as your question goes- I think you already answered it. The better college experience is in the non-aviation dorm, if I were you I'd have at it. If you wanna be crammed into a small space with another pilot you don't have dorm with one, you'll have plenty of being crammed in with another pilot later on in life when you are working

Dude WHY are you doing an AVIATION MAJOR!? WAKE UP!
I just got done talking to some aviation friends/contacts about the cost to benefit ratio of aviation degrees and the SUCKERS still falling for it...some of us are on our second furlough or company going under at the ripe old age of our mid twenties (some in their mid twenties...). Couple that with making sub 30K for years.
Pilot Shortage? Nope. Don't buy the sun shine and advertising of the big 4 year aviation schools. There is a REASON their enrollment is plummeting and they counter with shiny glitzy ad campaigns to distract you from REALITY. Thetruthabouttheprofession.weebly.com!!!
Not meant to be mean. I want others to avoid the mistakes I have made. I am tired of aviation schools selling half truths if not lies. The internet has come sooo far in my lifetime. I wish it was around when I was getting into flying!

Not only would I avoid the aviation dorm, I would also avoid the aviation major.
An aviation major won't make you more attractive to an airline or a better pilot. Go have fun in college and learn something that isn't aviation related - fly after class. The way this industry works you're going to want to have a PLAN B.
Last time i checked, some airlines say that a bachelors degree is "preferred". Why shortchange ourself in an industry that is valuing human capital less and less??
