I might. I'd absolutely love to get a UPT slot someone...it's been a dream. But, we are really hurting for loadmasters right now...and I'm not sure I can up and leave a group of guys who've treated me so well since I came here. They all want to see me put in the application, but I'm pretty loyal to my unit...and my section...if we can get more LM's here soon, I'll probably put it in. I don't want to hurt these guys more by leaving...as we are down to a painful low. I love my unit with every ounce of me...the last thing I want to do is open another position that already doesn't need to be open...just because I want the pilot slot. There's still quite a few years before I reach the max age, and a lot can happen in those years - both good and bad. We'll see though...hopefully good things will happen...and we'll all get what we want.

Do you fly military?

I respect your desire to stand by your team, but put in for pilot now...

The military's circumstances might change, yours might change, your vision might slip, who knows. If you have an opportunity do it, otherwise you might spend the rest of your life wishing that you had.

We are all on the same team anyway, doesn't matter if you play a diferent position. There should still be plenty of ground-pounders that would like you LM slot.

Yes I may wish that I had...but if did it now, and we don't get the LM's we need...I'll regret leaving my section behind when they needed me. And that would hurt me far more than wishing I had gone for the UPT slot. It's not like I don't fly in the civilian world. I can't do that to them until we get our numbers back up. Flying is great, and being a pilot rocks. Your right, LM's and pilots are both on the same team...we fly in the same plane to serve the same mission. We have plenty of pilots, but not enough LM's to fill the ranks. We are suffering, and it's taking it's toll on all of us. I cannot, and will not, leave until we get more members in this section. While I'd love to be a pilot, I will always stand firm with my belief that the needs of the unit comes first. And right now, it needs LM's more than it needs pilots. If you find the ground pounders who want LM slots...send them our way we need them. Maybe oneday...

Your committment to your fellow LM's is admirable. Don't know what you're unit is like, but mine takes 1.5-2 years to get to UPT after selected...If I were you, I'd apply for the slot. If they can't fill your shoes before you leave then it's on your superiors shoulders for not doing what it takes to run their unit as efficiently as possible. The guard was there before you born and will be there long after your gone. Sometimes you have to look out for number one as well. I'm with Rickair....TAKE THE SLOT!

As painful as it seems, keep in mind that in very few cases is anyone showing a dedication to YOU like you are to your bro's. Maybe "they" haven't taken action because you're still there and things seem OK to "them"?

Always take care of yourself, and keep in mind that the military has worked just fine for 200+ years before you were there.... we're all replaceable.

That was actually a good interview point once - that I had trained my folks so well I could step away for a week and not get a phone call because something was jacked up.

Well I certainly appreciate the comment guys...I really do. I'd do anything for these guys...including giving up a career, to better the unit...and it's not like I'm unhappy with what I do, because I thoroughly enjoy the 'family.' But I do agree that I also have to do things for me as well. Viper, I couldn't tell by your profile and forgive me for asking if you've mentioned this elsewhere but what unit are you with? I don't care what unit I get selected for...and I'm not too worried about the age limit right at this moment. It gives me some flexibility to finish things with the current unit before I go all out and head off to UPT. I don't know what the current time frame is for being sent to UPT is either, I would imagine it wouldn't be much different than yours.

Again, I appreciate the warm comments.

Sounds to be good, everyone has their own opinions, just like everything else, most will find problems in anything, I shall go to take a look....
