Also note information received and transmitted is usually in a standard order/format and using standard phraseology (It is not near as mind boggling as is currently seems to you) Also use the KISS principle (Don't start a conversation...) and readback required information. Actually, in flight, you should have been talking on the radio more at an "uncontrolled" field than you normally would at a towered field. Also check out the Pilot/ Controller glossary and consider using a knee board with a clearance pad.

Listening to Live ATC is invaluable. I taught foreign students & during primary training made them all listen to ground, tower, appch/dep and copy down as much as they could as they listened & bring it to me. I'd also have them circle anything that they didn't understand so we could discuss it together. I found this to be the most effective method. It really accelerated things.

Kinda surprises me that no body pointed out the AIM.

My own experience was 180 out from yours. I learned to fly in a fairly busy Class C airspace and I was worried the first time I went to an UNcontrolled field for my first solo x/c. I kept asking who was going to be directing me around and the old guys were just laughing at me and telling me to enjoy the freedom!

My instructor should suggested doing a session in which hes the ATC and just talk to him!
Like I said a year from now ill look back and this will be second nature to me hopefully!
