OK, I made another trip down to COS and it raised a question.

After my departure I was told to turn left heading 330 and did, which is a direct heading to the Air Force Academy (class D).

About 10 miles south of the Air Force Academy (class D), they stated 'resume own navigation' so I promptly turned East away from the Academy, and the mountains, towards my stated heading to clearance of 010.

About 30 seconds later they stated turn left heading 330 for departing traffic, which I did, and after a couple minutes I was within 2 miles of the class D at the academy again before they cleared me to resume own navigation and I barely missed it.

The ceiling of the airspace is 8800', I was at about 7000 and climbing slowly at 400 fpm and 70 knts (Cessna 152 ).

My question is don't they see they are sending me straight into a potentially bad situation? Am I making a big deal of nothing?

What do I need to do differently?

If you are receiving radar services from approach control that has jurisdiction you are not expected to coordinate a transition into D airspace.

In any case if in doubt just ask them

2-1-16. SURFACE AREAS

a. Coordinate with the appropriate nonapproach control tower on an individual aircraft basis before issuing a clearance which would require flight within a surface area for which the tower has responsibility unless otherwise specified in a letter of agreement.

REFERENCE-
FAAO JO 7210.3, Para 4-3-1, Letters of Agreement.
14 CFR Section 91.127, Operating on or in the Vicinity of an Airport in Class E Airspace.
P/CG Term- Surface Area.

b. Coordinate with the appropriate control tower for transit authorization when you are providing radar traffic advisory service to an aircraft that will enter another facility's airspace.

What he said, and never be afraid to ask atc a question like that. It's all about covering your rear.

Ever heard this saying

"You mess up, you die,
a mechanic messes up, you die,
ATC messes up, you die...."

Remember that, doesnt mean things are always fatal, but its your butt in the seat, not theirs, so be proactive!!

It's not uncommon to be vectored close to another airspace that isn't controlled by the people you're talking to. That have a landline with which they communicate with other controllers.

But bottom line - if you're getting nervous don't be afraid to ask. Always C-Y-A!!!
