Job Market
I graduated from Virginia Tech last December and I've been working in Richmond since. I'm on the verge of saying forget the office and changing directions. I have several flight schools in mind.
If I get into aviation and find myself sitting around without a job, I'll feel like a fool. For the peeps out there in the thick of it right now, what would you say? Stick with the corporate scene or take to the skys? What's the outlook in the av market? Future there? or am I just being romantic!?

Job Market
The market is ok right now. AOPA said in May of 2005 there were 1,215 " Professional Piolts" hired. Flying is great, hard, and fun. DON'T plan on making any money untill your 3 or 4 year at a airline. However, if the majors start hiring then things will all change. Use this website to answer how much you will make a year. Most airline pilots fly around 1000 hours a year. If you make $34.00 a flight hour, then you know how much you'll make a year! Go down to the airport and go on a intro flight. You'll know right then if you want to fly for a living, I did!
Good luck, hope it helps......

If you dont pursue it then you always wonder if you would of made it or not for the rest of your life. If you are to scared to take the risk, then dont pursue aviation. If you are ready and willing to take the risk, becasue the pay-off is great, then go for it. If you ask any captain, "Is it worth it," almost all of them will say yes! The choice is yours
1.Sit behind a desk for the next 20 years
2.Sit behind a cockpit more than 5 miles high in the sky for 20 years (not to mention the great view)

There will always be jobs for pilots, don't worry about that. All that really matters is what you are willing to work for. Forget your romantic notions about flying, it is a job. Also, you have the opportunity to lose your job each and every checkride (at an airline). Like someone suggested, get an intro flight, if you positively cannot stay on the ground, go fly. Personally, I would suggest buying a plane and drilling holes, that is the fun part of flying. Visiting different airports and "seeing the world" is a misnomer, all you see is a hotel and airport terminal. Only fly if you love it, you won't make any money at it.

i'll second that...its a job - as my father liked to say, once they pay you and expect you to be on time you have a job...unfortunately, its increasingly becoming a job without the pension, benefits, and prestige it once held...but its still something i'd like to do so i won't have any regrets in life...i can't imagine retirement thinking about the things i should have done if only...
