As far as I can tell, you're not contractually bound to ATP if you instruct for them. The guy behind the Youtube channel "Prop & Gear" left them shortly after finishing standardization. The CFI I'm working with right now left ATP after a bit as well. He said he would have probably stayed longer if he'd been sent to Florida, Arizona, or SoCal.

You can choose your "base" but, depending on company needs, you may spend some time at another location "temporarily."

As of now there is no contract for you to work for them. In fact, they don't even consider you an employee when you instruct for them - instead you're on a 1099 and are an independent contractor (have fun with this during tax season).

As far as hours are concerned, if you go to a location like CRG, VGT, IWA, LGB, or some others you'll probably be looking at 80+ hours a month. However there are locations where you will not fly nearly as much as you'd like.

When it comes to selecting what location to instruct at, when you're in standardization they'll give you a list of where they need instructors immediately and you'll have to choose from that list. If your desired location is there, great, if not, you'll have to pick one immediately available and wait until your desired spot is available.

If you want serious hours every and better guaranteed pay, I'd suggest looking into instructing elsewhere when the time comes. But worry about that when you get to that point of your training. Things change.

If you have any questions about ATP feel free to PM me.

Question ATP Wilmington? (new member)

Hey Guys,

I'm moving to PA in couple of weeks and looking into both ATP in Wilmington DE(closest & Ideal) and Richmond VA.
- age of aircraft?
- quality of instruction?

The move from SF CA allows my wife and daughter to be closer to "grandma" so I can study and attend full time while my wife brings home the bread for a year :/

I am curious If anybody knows anything at all about either of these 2 locations? I am short on options but am hoping there might be some insight here - there seems to be very little online for these specific locations.

p.s. see this thread is a bit older, hoping there's a bit of life left.

Don't worry about the age of the airplanes- it's completely irrelevant. The quality of maintenance on the other hand...

" So much debt..."

I once met an individual who told me he wanted to be a pilot but " it costs so much I could never afford it ".

A few hours later he showed me a picture of his $40,000 Truck. ( This was when ATP was charging about 48K for the full course.)

Could afford a depreciating asset but not an investment in his Dreams/Career. (?)

What an Idiot.

Glad he never became a Pilot with those type of reasoning skills...

I went to ATP in Jax, got through program 0 time to all CFI ratings in 6.5 months. It’s a great program if you put the work in, but it’s mostly self study so don’t expect a ton of ground.

If all students were guaranteed their home location there would be too many instructors and very few hours to go around.

I just can't understand why anyone would want to instruct for atp.

If you're not okay with moving around, then ATP is a horrible choice to instruct for, you're better off looking for a local school.

If you're okay with moving around, there are way better places than ATP that will pay you more and still have you loaded up with students

I agree with your assessment. Its not a good option due to many reasons. I don’t plan to instruct at ATP. I’m headed to their CFI school soon.
