taxes
First off... thanks for all the inside info regarding ANA..
before I submit my application, I would like to know about the taxes.. if ANA pays is after taxes or does the pilot have to take care of that themselves??
other than the training period, I think this is my other major concern.
Thanks for the reply in advance.

For what I understand CREW since they are an American based company takes out social security taxes from your pay and then you are responsible for income and state taxes, with other contract companies (I'm with PARC) your pay is net. We don't have a resident status in Japan and we come in and out of the country as transit crew members so we are not liable for taxes there.

training period
Why is the training period so long??
I mean, is it just the time needed for the Japaneese to issue their license or is the delay because of backround checks or for some other reason??
Normally, it takes 8 weeks for a new hire to come on line in any other major airline!

It is long because it is Japan. I know that sounds simplistic, but it truly is. This same program in the US would be an 8 week course. They drag things out with days off between sim sessions. You also go through radio license course, law course, and other miscellaneous items to get the Japanese ATP.

The only taxes that you need to pay quarterly are the state taxes.

I noticed on the Crew Resources website that the FO contract states 10 days off and 2 commuting days. Is that new? Also, are you still able to take two vacation days a month to add to your time at home? How hard is it to get the company to schedule your monthly days off back to back?

Yes it is new, they are now offering the option of taking two commuting days but they reduce the per diem accordingly (well, the per diem is the same you will see advertised on the website, you just don't get the increase that they will apply to the 50% of the per diem due to the decline of the dollar vs. the yen) but many guys are taking it because it only amounts to less than $200 USD so it is not worth it to stay two extra days for the money. Yes you are able to add your vacation days as well so you are able to get if you so choose, 10 + 2 + 2 if you take the commuting days and vacation days monthly. Periods of days off back to back is also not a problem and some guys do it like that, it works out for guys who are single a lot better because the period of days off in a row is nice, but then you pay it with a long duty period of about six weeks in a row. I have to say that we do have a lot of flexibility in choosing our days off here but of course there will be conflicts with days and compromises to be made on the busy vacation seasons such as Christmas and the summer vacation season, we all sort of take our turns working Christmas, last year I work during the holidays so that this year I am able to get it off, that sort of thing.
