Dubai bankrupt???
So....I have been reading articles about Dubai I'm real trouble...such as 3000 cars being abondoned at the airport, construction coming to a halt, and massive layoffs...if this is true...what is going on a Emirates. Are you load factors strong? Are these false reports? I umderstand that there are strict laws over there so you guys be careful when you respond to this...huh...if there are no responses I will take my statement as true and wish the best for you guys over there. If there are not true...would appreciate that someone could shead some light on the situation...thanks

"Time Out Dubai" the throw away mag in the hotel room here has an article on the consequences of running away from debt. Yes, there are many cars in the airport parking lots. I'm not EK so I don't know about their loads. I know they stopped hiring but that was blamed on the Boeing strike. If the hiring starts up again, that should answer the question.

132 views and no response...ok...I will take my statement as true so far. For those who might not understand the silence...Dubai has very strict laws stating you can be jailed by statements that can damage the economy. So what I have heard or read that Dubai is keeping their verge of bankruptcy hush hush. But I can't post links because I am my phone but google "Dubai Airport abandoned cars". There is a ton of articles including one from the nytimes...which is the one that got my attention. To the men and women out it the sandpit...I wish you luck...but please if I am wrong still correct me because I don't want to start false information. I have been looking at Emirates myself but now not very comfortable about the information I have found. Thanks. Also I read that Dubai had to borrow money from Abu Daubi so in essence Abu Daubi owns Emirates...now this seems far fetched...but again please be careful when you respond...and don't respond at all if this us true...not worth going to jail...everyone else will get the point.

This has been done to death on PPRuNE.
As far as being jailed...they are talking about the media. It's no secret that the global recession has affected Dubai. There is talk of up to 1500 residence visas being cancelled every day. Is it true? Who knows. That very same NY Times article also says that traffic in Dubai is much lighter....I'd love to know what areas he is talking about. That reporter has probably never been to Dubai...if he had, he would know not to say Persian Gulf.
The rumor of Abu Dhabi gov't getting a slice of Emirates in turn for a bailout is very persistent. Nothing has been made public and higher-ups in EK deny it. Who knows?
As far as your interest in EK...I would advise you look elsewhere. Etihad, Qatar and Gulf Air...none of these carriers have had their working conditions touched. I have heard that Air Arabia is even giving pay rises! There appears to be vindication going on for the pay rises that EK had to give the last few years...they are taking it back.
There is now a hiring freeze at EK, management have assaulted our working conditions using the recession as their excuse. EK is still making millions in profit, not billions...so they are taking it out on the pilot body. Also, the days of EK taking CRJ guys are in the past. With many pilots worldwide who have type ratings in the types of aircraft that EK fly, they have "the pick of the litter".
Maybe in a couple of years?

I am not trying to be rude, but this is NOT PPRuNE. Most of us do not want it to be like PPRuNE and that is why we come here to APC.
Thank you passing some of the info on to us. The recent changes at EK have me looking the other way.

I know I will get slammed, but even with the "disappointing" changes in working rules and the still unresolved housing situation (yes I am part of the people still waiting) I consider EK's package way better than others in the Gulf area. I guess its a symptom of "the grass is always greener on the other side". Just look at the people at QR, GF and EY saying that "you should look at EK first"....
As far as your question about recent EK's loads, for what I have seen they have been mixed. I have flown both oversold and almost empty. It seems the decay has been in the premium classes though.
Hope it helps.

UAE's economy is hurting because of the price of oil. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, even Russia are all feeling the effects of cheap oil. That's why OPEC justed voted to cut production. Don't worry, the price of oil will be back in the $130 range soon enough. OPEC will make sure of it!

I have heard the same thing and I saw it on CNN-I. I hear its the low level laborers that are getting the boot but I really have trouble believe it after what I saw while getting the medical for my residence visa the other day. I was the only white boy in a sea of 500+ Pakistanis (and I am estimating that number a bit low)
