When I walked around in my too small slippers, stepping around black blotches where the maids had swept cigarette ashes into the never-cleaned carpeting, I could have only wished for a Kang.

Okay, thread hijack, what are the most annoying/disgusting things about China?

For me:

People spitting everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Loogies in elevators, grocery stores, all over the sidewalks. Yuck...just yuck.

The driving and the constant honking. I get nauseous and a headache from the constant slamming on the breaks, sudden accelerations, sharp turns and endless honking.

Pollution. Regularly exceeding hazardous levels. It is actually worse than how the news portrays is.

Anyone else?

P.S. My favorite part of China is when we switch to Flight Levels from Meters.

 

Yes there are lots of things I don't like about places like China. Loogies in the galley as they walk onto the aircraft, or into an airsick back on a 3 hour flight, and then they put the airsick bag back into the seat back, and say nothing.

But then I go back home, and I see things that are just as stupid, or more. I think my least favorite is turning on a TV, and it is a talk show, and they are discussing the latest events on a reality show. Really? They have TV shows where they talk about what goes on on other TV shows?

80% of the fairer sex talking on their mobile phones, 100% of the time they are behind the wheel of a moving car, with kids in the back.

There is lots of stupidity everywhere, it is just different. Spend enough time out of your home country, and when you go home, you will go

Been here 5 years. I've gone from quite a peaceful person to having rage induced toxic syndrome.....

1. The spitting. I will never get used to this. It's like an Olympic sport here. Saw a guy spit on the carpet in the terminal at Pudong. The noise they make when they spit is disgusting

2. The smoking. Cancer must be rampant here. See the guy talking with a cig hanging out his mouth oh how nice

3. The way they eat soup. The noises they make drives me crazy. When they chew it's like looking at cows grazing

4. The driving. I could spend hours on this one alone. Not only are they the worst on the planet they are the slowest!!! There is a reason you don't see chinese F1 drivers

5. The lack of common sense.

6. The lack of consideration. I could easily see a chinese walking into a library in America and yelling on his cellphone while not even realizing its wrong

7. The irony. Go put a foreigner in jail for 5 days for riding a gas powered scooter but do nothing to the millions on electric scooters that cause all the accidents

8. The noise. It's unbearable. The horns. OMG

9. The litter. Besides shenzhen most of these cities are a cesspool

10. The talking. They can never stop talking. Can never enjoy the silence. Just wak into any chinese resteraunt and you'll understand

 

You got most of my pet peeves pretty nicely Airspeed. I'll add cutting in line, or total lack of etiquette when it comes to queuing.

Yep, I go home to oz now and find it's not the place I once thought it was. Full of angry bogans!
