The default of “min days off = 3”only applies to when the software has to give you a day off. For example, if it awards a 2 day trip on Day 1 and 2 and it has another 2 day trip starting on Day 3 that you’re legal for and meets your preferences, it will award you that trip too, even if you don’t waive. There is no default setting that prevents the software from awarding back to back pairings unless they occur on the same day. Several pilots complain that they are getting back to back pairings without asking for them, without waiving anything and they want to know how to bid so that they don’t get them. So contrary to popular (incorrect) belief, the software defaults to allowing back to back pairings. You have to tell it not to.

If you think about it, when you waive min days off, all you can waive to is 1. So, if “min days off” controlled the ability to have back to back pairings, then there would be no way to tell the software to give you back to back pairings, and you would never see them as you would always have to have at least one day off in between pairings. “Min days off” does NOT equal “min days off between pairings”. To force the software not to award back to back pairings, then using an agreeable pattern bid or “minimum base layover” command or something of that nature is needed.

That all being said, the more days off in a row you ask for, then naturally the more likely you are to get trips stacked together as you have to get the credit somehow, but it’s only an indirect effect.
