When do you think new hires are given access to these ALPA letters?

You seem to be under some assumption that new hires are given access to this info before they show up.

 

We can’t even get our own pilots to read ALPA comms, and they’re sent directly to them. What makes you think prospective pilots will read them when they don’t even have access to them?

 

That’s strange, I didn’t pay for hotels when I upgraded. Are you an F9 pilot for just bashing F9 for your own selfish reasons?

 

If you're not based in DEN or wherever the upgrade training takes place you get a hotel...yeah... Otherwise your SOL. Does this answer your question? I've probably been at F9 a bit longer than you think...know your contract much?

 

The difference is what the CBA states vs what is happening with hotels. Read the very first paragraph of Section 5.

 

Awesome! I’m assuming you’re a captain, which leads me to my next question. Instead of accusing your fellow pilots of knowingly and willfully violating the contract, why aren’t you making an effort to mentor them?

 

OK, so I just had something of a similar conversation in the cockpit the other day and have found that not too many that I talk to understand what this "difference" means wrt this company and pilot labor. Anytime you have an action, either by the company OR the pilots, that differs from what the CBA language dictates, you inherently create a problem (even if the difference is a net positive for the pilot force). In the case of hotels, if the company starts to provide them whenever they want (despite no provision for it or opposing language in the CBA), it does NOT mean that the company provides hotels. Therefore, they could cease to do so whenever they liked. Or they could offer it to one class and not the other. Or any other combination of offers. Having one group benefit while others receive status quo alienates the pilot force and is fairly hazardous (yet common) tactic that many companies ascribe to - especially during contract time.

Not all money is good money. If the company really wants to provide hotels for new-hires, they can draft another LOA that states that they will do that from now on IN ALL TRAINING CASES and FOR ALL PILOTS.

 

I understand the contract. Are you saying pilots who are upgrading and going through training outside their domicile are not having their hotel expense covered by the company? I’m not talking about, for example, a scenario where a pilot who is LAS based, chooses to commute to LAS and subsequently gets assigned SIM training after his DEN ground school is over. That’s on the pilot and no airline would cover such as expense.

One if the issues with hotels becomes den fo’s upgrading into another domicile. You’re not considered based in the new domicile until the effective date. Not the award date. So now if you don’t live in den you’re on the hook for 2-3 weeks of hotel stays.
