Just do ones job and no more and it all works out. Don't drop the brake early, and dont kill yourself to make up time and get shortcuts. If you timeout you timeout. Fly cost index as that is what they want and don't beg Ops for a gate. Just do your job not the gates or ramps. If thier plan is to have a **** show, they sit back and enjoy the show. It is hard to accept Mediocrity and watch a dumpster fire, but once you are all out of ****s, the job is much more enjoyable. Enjoy the crews you are with. The nice planes, time at home, and still a decent wage for the amout of effort given. I know most folks don't want any advice, but just not carrying about the operations has been great for my job satisfaction, stress, and life enjoyment. I find happiness at home, contentment at work.
I agree with this... Basically, the mentality I have taken, aside from go home leg, which is basically every other leg because #1days. When I arrive 15 mins early and still get in 10 mins late because of gates, rampers, ops doesn't answer, etc. it is pretty irritating. Maybe because I am not getting "paid" to sit around like that usually since it still underblocks a fair bit of time.

This. This even applies to all this fuel nonsense. Guys all worked up over the fuel changes. Instead just take what they give you, and if I am short, I will divert and get what I need.

I flew with one of the real senior captains that is now at UAL. He said that one has to develop a sense of professional apathy in order to not lose your mind at F9. I think this is true, but the stink that is generated at the head of the company rubs off on everyone that works here. Just like the guy that lets one rip next to you waiting in line to get your drivers license renewed and everyone looks at you. This is what happens at F9. Pax don't know about BB or BL or ops nor do they care. They are looking straight at you as pilots that don't care and can't get anywhere on time. It's not an easy thing to deal with when it takes a lot of work to get where we are and maintain it.

I'm with this 100%. Some pilots want to fly ludicrous speed to only sit on the ground waiting for a gate, and still somehow be late because he aircraft at your gate is still under Mx. Back to the topic though I was told the missing piece was also pushing back when still under mx and not yet released.

I disagree. If the company wants to run lean, go for it. If I have to divert sooner than I’d like, ain’t no skin off my back. They’ve done this in the past and guess what?, diversions increased. And what happens after that? Dispatch added more gas. Doesn’t take very many expensive diversions to make a change.

So...

Lots of differing opinions out there wrt fuel. As it should be. No one is wrong and no one's idea is better than any others. We all have limits and mine are different from yours. I think the company knows this. Arguing about it is probably dumber than any of the ideas presented here.

If you have a new idea - perhaps one that many don't know about - I'd love to hear (read) it. The most dangerous pilot is the one who thinks he/she knows it all. But otherwise, the ideas so far are as old as flying.

The 3 most useless things in aviation.

The altitude above you.
The runway behind you.
The fuel you left in the gas truck.

Also, not disparaging any of the new guys. But there’s a lot more go arounds due to unstable and just not being experienced jet pilots. I find myself poking a lot more . “ hey I don’t feel like going around, you might want to slow down and drop the gear “

Here's my approach to the situation.

If I want more gas, I get more gas. And then I tell dispatch I already added it.

Be a Captain when you need to be
