Im also guessing you stick them out right at the placard speeds with the rational "if its good enough for boeing then its good enough for me"

Like most, I used to do only 30 unless forced by a short runway, and when I did 40, it also tended to be a professionally unrewarding experience and a major demonstration of gravity to the pax, so I ended up doing alot of 40's to beat the beast into submission For me, success using 40 is definately a currency related thing.
DF
p.s. I don't push Flap Placard limits. Might be a correlation with your group, not in my case.

I'll clarify that the majority are and that it really doesn't fly that great at 40. Boeing crammed 20lbs of "Stuff" into a 10lb bag to keep the landing distance down with the NG which is the only one I fly.

I'm not an engineer and don't claim any real knowledge on long term issues with operating flaps at the placard speeds. It would seem to be easier on the system deploying them at a slower speed, especially on the NG's that have over twice as many hours as the highest time USAF B-52.

Given the fact the Flaps 40 yields an approach speed of upwards of 8 knots, I’ll put the 800’ less runway required to my advantage. That said, no matter the weather, wind or what not, 40, unless approach climb limit weights prevail, is my choice of landing flap.

I wonder how much fuel that eats up compared to flaps 30 approaches. You might be "hurting the bottom line"

Why would anyone do this?
Flaps/slats are lift devices - not drag devices. If you need to slow, use the boards and/or gear. When you get to the point where you need more lift (i.e. the low end of the manufacturer approved flaps speeds), then put out some more flaps.

Airplane sure slows up nicely and rate of descent increases impressively at flaps 1 when the leading edge devices extend. Must be a little bit of drag in there somewhere. 🤣
