Default Sociopath

3% of men and 1% of women fit the description. A sociopath is an individual without a conscience. They lack the ability to empathise with others. They are disconnected and see others as a resource to use and abuse. An airline career would be a perfect place for such individuals.

Another interesting theory is that pilots can develop obsessive compulsive disorder over time. Pilots at Horizon Air were interviewed and tracked by a grad student to study the the progression of OCD.

Call me crazy but I think this kind of thing is interesting.

I'll be the first to agree with the OCD thing. Anyone see The Aviator?

I would love to be a fly on your wall when one of your kids tells you dad I want to be an airline pilot!

Interesting...

Aren't all humans are inherently a little selfish. It seems like Sociopath is a label attached to an individual when the trait is excessive. ...so it would appear from the reading here.

Come to think of it, forums seem to propigate this behavior. Selfishness feeds ego. I think we all bring our egos with us when we post from time-to-time. I know I do, even though I try not to. I even spell check my posts. Why? I am affraid I'll look stupid I guess. Why should that really bother me?

Maybe we all have a little of this sociopathic behavior in us.
Did you spellcheck this one? Give it a shot.

LOL! No, and I KNEW I was gonna burn for it!

I just figured I might as well leave it alone since I already admitted to it.

Sky, I understand your point but where do you get off saying that those in the military tend to be sociopaths? Are there sociopaths in the military? I'm sure there are. But why would you say that? Especially if you are just trying to prove a point that being an airline pilot makes you selfish.

If you ask me, no matter your intentions, serving the military is a selfless act. As is giving your life for your friends, as I have seen a few of my brothers in arms do. I don't think selflessness falls into the definition of sociopath.

I have nothing against the military. It is a fine organisation but it seems to me that a high percentage of the gung ho fighter and bomber types fit the profile of a sociopath. Thier entire purpose is to kill others in the employ of our nation. A needed and appreciated act however it always seemed to me that those who excelled were void of a conscience.

It seems as if your one-demensional pop psychology has flown far from the mark. If you had ever experienced Military life you would understand the folly of your statements. People who excell in combat are not void of conscience, indeed I think you would find they feel much more strongly than you could possibly imagine, for a lifetime. It leaves a mark that can't be ignored. Most of these people act in defense of their brothers in arms. It is with regret that they kill, but it is also out of need to defend.

Would you consider yourself sick for defending you family against the threat of physical harm?

We can't all stay home with the wife and kids for the rest of our lives. I have to give the greatest respect to those who have risked everything for the defense of our lives and our country.
