To those of you who don't know much about the military I can recommend this two minute plus summary, it really is a good basic explanation:

Jungle,
I am only making observations.
An all volunteer army is weaker than a drafted one. Certain personality types are definitely drawn to military service and a portion of them volunteer for duty that will be almost certain to cause human suffering. I think it must be akin to premeditation. There is no military left that will challenge our Air force or Navy to a proper fight. A US military pilots biggest hazzard is to himself. Our ground forces have only our planes up there to worry about.
Just last night I watched a war documentary about Iraq and these two pilots were giddy almost that they were able to drop real bombs on a war target. The documentary went on to show the ground damage. The results were that they missed the target and destroyed homes and wiped out several families. The pilots attitudes were unconcerned.
It takes a special person to drop a 2000 pound bomb on a clay hut and go home without regrets. Simply applying for the job of an aggressor pilot is to accept that you will have some blood on your hands before your time is through.
The opposite of that would be a rescue helicopter pilot. Those guys really do risk everything to save lives. The guy who drops into a cold and unsettles sea risking his own life to save others truley is a hero.

You obviously do not understand blood on your hands. The apologists for the soviet union and saddam hussein is where you need to look if your looking for bloody hands. The morons in the senate encouraging al queada are the ones with bloody hands. And since you are obviously against stopping islamic facism I must assume you have fairly bloody Hands.

Yo Sky put down the weed and stop watching Al Jazeera. Our military does more to prevent civilian casualties than any other military in the history of mankind. Personally I think that is the problem.

We are in danger of bankrupting our nation, financially, emotionally and as a credible world power.

"Whatever gets you though the night" Sociopaths in fact sleep very well. They lack the empathy and conscience that keeps the rest of us up at night.

Sky, You have made a number of what you call observations here. Now I would
like to make a few. Nothing personal, no animosity.
You started this thread with a thesis you have failed to support. I even offered you
the clinical definition and diagnostic guidelines. You continued and expanded into
OCD as another likely affliction of the pilot group. Now, since announcing you are back
in the game you have described as having "a large percentage of sociopaths" you
have focused on Military pilots as suffering from illness.
I was at first amused and thought "That's cute, he is playing Doctor." Now I am
questioning your motivation, because you have offered no support for your thesis
and yet continue to toss it out in ever more specific directions. Your sole evidence
being a TV show in which you didn't understand the activity portrayed.
No big deal. I will just ask you to stop the slander out of respect for members of
this Forum. To save face it would be nice if you apologized, but I don't really expect that.
Consider these definitions and that word Schadenfreude again.
Common definitions
"Projection is the opposite defence mechanism to identification. We project our own unpleasant feelings onto someone else and blame them for having thoughts that we really have."
"A defense mechanism in which the individual attributes to other people impulses and traits that he himself has but cannot accept. It is especially likely to occur when the person lacks insight into his own impulses and traits."
"Attributing one's own undesirable traits to other people or agencies."
"The individual perceives in others the motive he denies having himself. Thus the cheat is sure that everyone else is dishonest."
"A man harboring attractions for a woman would perceive other men as having the same attractions for her."
"People attribute their own undesirable traits onto others. An individual who unconsciously harbours his or her aggressive/sexual tendencies may then imagine other people acting in an excessively aggressive or sexual way."
"An individual who possesses malicious characteristics, but who is unwilling to perceive himself as an antagonist, convinces himself that his opponent feels and would act the same way."
Like you, I am just making a few observations here. Do you like them?
This is my last post in this thread, a thread that I should have ignored since it made no sense from the start.

Perhaps we are simply approaching the topic from different vantage points.
I have re-read all of your posts here and have determined nothing to be dismissive of my premise and you haven't addressed any of my points. War is not fun but it must take a person of a persuasion to volunteer for it. Some might call it patriotism however most do not choose that life.
It seems to me that in order to pursue a position that knowingly will cause the demise of others I feel calls to a certain personality type. Definitions that I took from the Internet claim that 3% of the male population are sociopaths. Why then wouldn't an occupation that involves such a messy business have a higher percentage of them than say becoming a military nurse perhaps?
I am not trying to be disrespectful of the military at all. My goal is to see a few of my own sons in uniform one day. My point is that in my experience many of the EX-fighter types whom I have known seem to match the profile and it makes sense to me. As a young person I marveled at the flight capabilities of a fighter jet but I also never forgot what they are for.
Often documentaries film fighter pilots imediately after a mission. Displays of joy, mutual congradulations and satisfaction after a successful bombing run doesn't seem like a natural reaction to me. How else could someone be so void of the gravety of the event that they had just participated in unless they had a diffrent way to process the information. Lack of empathy? Emotional disconection perhaps? It makes perfect sence to me.
