With a lot of aircraft, especially those programmable right to autoland, it may work out about as well as anything. Get someone who spent a little time playing with the computer games, no problem. In a number of modern aircraft, a passenger could absolutely be talked down to a landing.

I've seen a few crewmembers who aren't much better than a passenger, and they manage to get it on the ground.

IF they can get on the radio, many but not all could be talked down. We take for granted that we can plop hundreds of tons of metal on the TDZ at almost 200 mph. But that sight picture is going to be intimidating to the unitiated.

But even figuring out how to key the mike would be a bridge to far in many cases... AP disconnect and PTT are pretty similar.

This poor guy actually had a CPL, didn't help him one bit...
