I always hear "Taco" when I am flying in New Mexico, I think it's the air national guard C130's.

The NM Air Guard are the "Taco's"..

So I've noticed something with call signs. Last names can be involved in the process.

A buddy of mine has the last name of Talley, call sign "Whacker".
Another friend has the last name of Herd , call sign "Buffalo".
I was at an airshow once and the guy doing the F-16 demo had a foreign name that sounded like "Rancheros" call sign, "Heuvos".

The play on your last name is the default. If the callsign has no such obvious connection that means it was EARNED somehow...and probably not in a good way.

I read an article in the 90's that stated what you said, as well as what Rick mentioned as well. The author stated some of the funniest ones he'd seen while researching the article were "chunks" for a guy that had "issues" at UPT. Another one was "rooter". The guy dropped a watch and it happened to slip into a sewer and the guy went in for it Roto rooter style.

I like the one of one of the pilots that flew in the movie Top Gun. Last name is Seckinger and the his call sign was "Secks".

Okay that makes sense. So I'm guessing my buddy with the call sign "Drip" got his via method B...

I saw 5 USMC Harriers with the call sign "Mars" do an overhead before and and after we split yesterday. 2 before we departed, the other 3 as were were lining up. So that was cool to get the free air show.

Probably on a transcon as they had the big fuel tanks attached I'm guessing.
