Laser energy is light...if you block light, you can't see out the windows.
It is possible to make a material where you can turn on a tint rapidly, this is being used in new airplanes for pax windows to replace the window shades. But I doubt such a device could react quickly enough...they depend on the mechanical motion of tiny crystals in the material. While LCDs have pretty quick respone times, the speed of light is hard to beat...
It only takes a fraction of a second for a high-power laser to dazzle, even damage, the retina.
I like the predator idea...

For a while now there have been welding masks that darken at the first spark. The do proteck the wearer; however, I am not sure they would be suited to flying.

You should see the aggresively ghey anti-laser glasses the AF makes us wear these days. They look like something out of a bad 80's movie and I'm sure cost over 2 grand. Don't forget to log off your annual anti-laser glasses training too.

I'm sure it would be possible to develop a defense against laser strikes, but since there have only been 200 or so reported in the past year, I doubt it would be worth the cost. Even if a plane does get hit with a laser it's highly unlikely to cause a crash.

I completely agree that the cost/benefit would not show value. I also agree that although there have "only been 200" this year, they seem to be on the rise. Rather than go through the expense of developing anti-laser technology, we should spare no expense in making the idiots that got caught misreable. That would be an excellent deterent. Seriously, even though they, and others, were ineffective, they had horrible intent. They did not know that they would be ineffective when they decided to go screw with airliners packed with innocent people and crews. Sometimes I think it is important to punish on intent rather than results. These people had vey bad intentions, they should get hammered hard.
