True. But you can still get a discount on a family plan if the iPhone is not the primary number. The discount will apply to the calling plan only - not the data. At $20/mo for unlimited data, the plan was pretty cheap. With the 3G data going to $30/mo, the plan will be in line with others like BlackBerry.

... Basically the question I have is, you guys say there is a discount for ALPA member airlines? Or is it that specific airline it goes by? What type of discount is this? They ask for a work e-mail address on the ATT website, but I don't have one, any idea how I get one?? Kinda lost with what they need, and what the discount is in the first place ...
Here's some info on that from our UPS website, hopefully it'll help you as well...
Ps. You can get the discount even after you've signed up for the service - just make sure they fax it in...
Can’t wait for the Treo barbeque party!!!
If you do not have access to a UPS email address, please do the following:
To complete the validation process, follow the steps below:
- Print our certification form.
- Follow the instructions as indicated on the form. You will be required to fax the certification form along with proof of employment or active student status with a qualified organization.
- After faxing the certification form call the following number to be enrolled as an Individual Responsibility User and activate any available service discount for which you may qualify:
1 (866) 355-8923, Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time.
Please note: you will be asked to provide your company's Foundation Account Number (FAN) xxxxxxxx. (use your company's code here - call them and I'm sure they have one)
For help with orders that have already been placed, call 888-444-4410Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - midnight and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. When calling to speak to a representative, be sure to reference the FOUNDATION ACCOUNT NUMBER: xxxxxxxx.

Hey Avi8torwannabe,
Thanks a lot for that info. I should be making the switch soon so hopefully it will work. I would imagine the same method would be used for other companies who dont have a work e-mail address. Thanks thanks

Abroad with an i-phone
Question: If you turn off data roaming, put mail auto-check in manual, and select airplane mode until you're back in the U.S., will that prevent any extra charges? I've heard that simply turning the phone off is not sufficient.

We (UPS) get 20% off on all plans however the discount does not apply to the internet plan which is an additional $30 a month. At Verizon I think we had 25% off and it was on the whole plan so the discount is not as 'generous'. Had Verizon offered the iPhone I'd have stayed with them but I'll be switching to AT&T in mid July. Already pre-ordered two phones for my family...
As far as international phone calls goes, IF iPhone does not block the WiFi feature for Skype, the rumor has it that very soon Skype will become one of the new applications and if so, you'll be able to go to the nearest Starbucks anywhere in the world and call your folks at home for pennies or even free if you call them while they're on the computer...
The video below shows how to download Skype onto a 'cracked' or 'jail broken' phone (takes less than a minute or so to do, at least so I've heard... ). Supposedly iPhone will let Skype to become an approved application rendering "freeing" your phone unnecessary...

I'm looking into the new 3G iPhone that is coming out next month and was curious to hear some opinions on the iPhone and AT&T from people that have one now. I'm with Verizon now and am happy with them... just getting the iPhone itch.
What is the coverage like with AT&T on the iPhone? Had any problems in any of the cities you fly to east of the Mississippi?
What about dropped calls... are they common?
Do you get any discount from AT&T on calling plans (with USAirways or ALPA) and if so, how much?
Do you like AT&T?
Anything else???
Thanks.

You're welcome. I got some more info, I went back to the AT&T store to double check on the airline, etc. discounts. The 2G iPhone (old phone) is NOT eligible for any discounts however the new 3G iPhone IS eligible for employee discounts.

haha good stuff. still gonna have to decide whether I should spend the $ on the i=phone or not. Or just stick with a basic flip phone with a camera and a clock on the front.

Turning off data roaming is just that. It turns of the data roaming so you can't email, surf the web or use any of the data based features. You have probably been hearing things from people who either don't own an iPhone or don't know what they are talking about. There is a usage counter so if you do turn on the data roaming you can monitor your use but you have to make sure your in one of the 36 countries. I thought the UAE was but I was wrong and I was hit with an extra $100 of data but then again I had had the phone for more than 2 weeks at that point.
