Don't call me Sir I work for a living!
Hi Bill,
From knowing a wee bit of the M-24 stuff (crash ARNG course with no fieldcraft a few of us were lucky enough to go to) I'd have to say it's mostly optics and good ammunition if you want to remain somewhat sane with the budget.
I read this bulletin board How accurate is a box stock Remington 700 .308? [Archive] - THR
and a few others like it a while back to get an idea of building a zombie culler.
Maybe it will help you find some answers to your more technical concerns.

I just saw in GUNS Magazine this month that Remington, after 80 something years is going to manufacture the 1911 again. Right here in America for $599. That might be one I can afford instead of a Taurus 1911. Anyone know if the Smith 1911 is any good? I would rather buy American 1911, and Springfield makes theirs in europe now.
As for the Smith and Wesson 1911's - I've heard mostly good things about them, but I don't like the asthetics of the external extractor - its not how Mr. Browning initially designed it and for some reason I can't depart from the traditional look and function enough to spring for a S&W 1911. There are other American made options too - such as Kimber, or heck if money is no object go for a Wilson Combat, Dan Wesson, Les Bauer etc. which are pretty much the holy grail of custom 1911s.
(note: my first handgun purchase was a German HK USPc, and I own a Honda, so I don't claim to be holy about buying american, but hey - we should make the effort once in a while and my 12 year old F-150 has never let me down, my next vehicle will likey be a Ford Escape rather than a CRV but I digress) My feeling is that 1911's ought to be made in a America like football should be played on sunday and monday night - but there are other good ones out there. Shop around, be patient and buy the one that "speaks" to you. Hapy hunting and good luck to us both!

For anyone still looking for something let me know. I am current FFL holder and would be glad to answer any questions on firearms. If I do not know the answer I will ask someone that knows. As a side gig for me I have very little markup on anything. I have dealer accounts with Rock River, Daniel Defense, Stag, LMT to name a few. My email is [email protected] (take out the XXX.
By the way Herb, nice looking family.

Just got my CCW and am shopping for a small gun for concealed carry. The only handgun I own thus far is a 5" Springfield XD and is too big for me to carry concealed comfortably and adequately; I'm a slim guy. The compact and sub-compact XD's seem too chunky for a gun as small as they are.
I'm looking so far at the Walther PPS and Kel-Tec pf9 so far. Anyone here have any experience or insight on either of these? Any other suggestions?

Go to a good gun store, start at one end of the counter and pick up and handle each gun one at a time. The best gun for you is the one that comfortably fits your hand and all the releases are within thumb's reach. This is also the secret to being able to hit a target somewhere in the middle.
Walther and Kel-Tec are great products, and nowadays all high-end gun manufacturers machine everything to a close tolerance. They'll work good, not to worry.
Just my $0.02, no, more like $0.03
