Found it......."Final Descent" has to be seen to understand just how bad a flying movie can be.

SFO -San Francisco International (1970) has to be a contender for the worst flying movie.

More recently:

Broken Arrow (1996) "would you mind not shooting at the thermonuclear weapon".

Pearl Harbor (2001) Any who's heard the song in Team America knows what I'm talking about.

Pearl Harbor.....

What a huge disappointment that was. They took one of the most relevant historical moments in modern times and turned it into a popcorn, puppy love romance.

Yes - he got quite a few rides - and the word is that he got very sick.
Do you believe that Tom Cruise was NOT given a ride or two?
If Sting and Joan Lunden can get rides - why not someone actually filming a movie that the USN helped out with quite a bit?

Word also was that a rescue swimmer REALLY had to save him from nearly drowning in the mishap aftermath scene (entanglement in the lines) and never even told the Rescue Swimmer 'thank you'

One of my favortie bloopers in TopGun is when 'Sundowner" has his callsign on his helmet IN the airplane when 'Mav' won't engage, but when confronting him in the line - the callsign is GONE! Went so fast it blew it right off!

Edit - Tom Cruise did give the 36th Fighter Squadron a nice popcorn machine when he got a backseat ride with them.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Quentin Tarantino's take on Top gun.

The coolest part was watching Maverick flame Charlie a few times. Anybody seen any recent pictures of "Charlie" recently? Zoinks.

The mid-air extension tube rising up out of the middle of the F117 was stupid too. I wonder where they thought the engines went?

That movie did more for recruitment than just about any other. I can only imagine being a single Tomcat pilot in San Diego in 1987.
The first 5 minutes or whatever it was of Top Gun is probably the best 5 minutes in movie history.

But then people start talking and a plot sort of unfolds and the movie gets cheesy.

The funny thing is to look at the 1986 movie poster, look at Cruise today and then look at Charlie today.

Should I post a picture?

Greatest flying movie though, outside of Airplane! is Always.

That pretty much sums it up. If you can get past the dialogue, plot, glaring technical absurdities ("He's spinning out to sea") and a borderline homoerotic subtext (Or is it just me?) it's a great movie. Still, I have to admit I love to watch it. I knew some of the extras and it reminds me of a time and place in my life I think of fondly. Not to mention, it provided lots of campy quotes for guys to sarcastically throw around.

She had a restaurant in Key West in the mid 90s. She still looked pretty good then, but I was surprised by how short she was, which puts Tom Cruise in perspective.

As has been said, a great recruiting movie. I wonder how many 18 year olds with C- averages and 20/100 vision wound up as Aviation Boatswain's Mates on the promise they'd get to fly jets someday?
