Goatees at jet blue

There are a whole lot of pilots, private and otherwise, flying around with facial hair.
If it interferred with O2 significantly, there'd probably be a rule to that effect. To my knowledge, no country on earth has a no facial hair rule.
Just getting the thing on is probably 90% of the battle in an emergency.

That rational is highly debatable. The navy did beards for a while, and as long as you trimmed it correctly the seal is fine.
Personally I think it's a professional image issue more than anything else.

Once watched a bearded management pilot at FEDEX get sent to the bathroom with a disposable razor before being allowed to jumpseat.
EDIT: This just in, all airlines have officially approved beards for its pilots due to external 'persuasion'.

in an emergency situation even if the mask seal leaks a bit its probably not a big problem with facial hair .. i suspect it goes back to military pilots not wearing a beard so as to insure a good seal for long periods of time on O2.... as long as its not scraggly I could care less.... Hell if some guys would just comb their hair once in a while it would be an improvement.

That AC is 23 years old and the study was conducted on masks that are not in wide use anymore. I have a goatee and the mask we have actually makes contact with my face over the goatee. It is much wider than my beard is. Mine is neatly trimmed though so guys with a bushier beard may have a problem. We have guys with a full bead as well so they may have some seal issues.
Go outside of the US for a bit and you'll see many bearded pilots and dare I say many are held in a much higher regard than those of us here at home. As for jumpseating, I can't do it anymore anyway so it doesn't affect me.
