Obligatory Pilot Shortage Article

And in the 70s the idea that technology will ever replace the flight engineer or allow a widebody to fly JFK-LHR with just two bored pilots was implausible and therefore unlikely, right?

Automobile? It will never replace a good horse. Airplane? That contraption will never amount to anything, who would get in that thing when they could take the train. No navigator/engineer? I won't trust some box to do a man's job.

Anybody familiar with the current "issues" with existing RPA's, knows it will be a long time before there is any significant number of RPA's cris-crossing the country in the National Airspace System...and that's before they ever put a passenger on one. Afghanistan is one thing...the FAA's kingdom over the US is entirely another.
....as is the Pacific Ocean... or the Indian Ocean...

The impending pilot shortage has been talked about for at least the last 17 years that I've been flying however it's never come to fruition. That said, there has never been a time like now where the circumstances are alinging for it to actually happen. Airlines are so top heavy and even marginal growth are coming together at a level never before seen.

NO SCOPE RELIEF.
If management wants to have enough pilots to staff the airline, they will need to "up" the compensation to attract the fewer pilots available to be hired.
Still, the "shortage" has never materialized so I'll believe it when I see it.
