Default Surfboard Bag Fees

I'm an avid surfer. I'm just curious if airline employees/pilots are still required to pay extra fees for checked baggage, specifically board bag fees. I'm assuming it depends on the airline, but wasn't sure if it was like the jumpseat system, where if theres room, you can go...

I am too, and I have always wondered this myself.. Until the last time I was waiting on a departure, I watched the baggage guys throw the bags out of the plane with a Hail Mary pass each time.

No matter how many towels I can stuff in the bag, my board would definitely have some dings on it after that baggage crew. I just have a day board bag and not a travel one though.
