There are accounts of some pre naval merchant and exploration ships' crews that had a semblance of a uniform that indicated their position as to make it easier to bark out orders to configure all those sails. DAL uniforms are almost identical to US Navy uniforms.

Nevertheless, your observation doesn't trump the history of airline pilot uniforms. It could easily be that the current US Navy's dress uniform design have roots in civilian maritime uniforms.
