Why? I remember everyone saying JetBlue would fail... well, fail once they had to pay their maintenance, or American was going to buy them... etc. this goes back though Morris Air, through People's Express, and all the way to that little start-up Southwest -- legacies and their pilots have predicted the doom of, arguably, the most succesful part of the market for decades.

The truth is, ifyou want to see the play book of how NOT to compete with an LCC, look no further than Delta.

You may be right, but... because you shot from the hip, I ask... Why?

737's with a shiny paint job ?

They'll have regional pilots falling all over themselves for right seat @ $35/hour. The rationalization will be, "well, it's a step up from my crappy regional flying a turboprop or old CRJ-200", etc. Trust me.............they'll be banging down the door. Then in 5 years, they'll be whining about poor pay and working conditions and the state of the industry and we need a union, etc., etc.

Same ole, same ole..........

Because something like 95% of the startups since 1981 have been failures. Southwest, jetBlue, and airtran have been the exceptions, not the rule. Tough to make a buck in this business without a killer business plan and shrewd management...both of which are rare in aviation.

Yeah.....but, 500 hours in a 737 might get me a job at the majors !

If they fail, it won't be for lack of pilots willing to fly for peanuts and it'll take 5 years before they flounder.

You picked 2 success stories (Morris doesn't count because they were bought out). What about SkyBus, AirSouth, Atlanta Air, Midway, Hooters Air, Air21, Midway, Independence Air, Champion, Legend, Muse, Vanguard, or the host of others I can't remember?

How profitable has Virgin America been?

The environment is changed. There aren't a whole lot of economically viable aircraft sitting in the boneyard waiting to be snapped up at $3.25 gallon jet fuel. There's not a whole lot of venture capital willing to bankroll losses. Delta, UAL, AMR, USAir and SWA control the majority of the market, and they're running a very low margin business. Who is going to invest for a 3% return against the big guys with the history that's out there?

Fools. And their money will soon be parted.

Because JB is a rare exception. They also didn't try to start up in an already saturated East Coast market. When they started in JFK, it was only slot restricted in the afternoon. Much less domestic traffic out of JFK then. You have named around 4 airlines that were successful start ups. Go look around on the Internet and see how many start ups have failed. The ratio of failed is successful is staggering. How did SkyBus do? VA has made a profit in only ONE quarter.

It's unlikely they'll be successful, especially in this economy.
