Sounds to me like the solution is clarifying the FARs so a pic in cruise with your camera on your airplane mode phone is explicitly authorized.

Or, we can all bring along cameras obscura (not sure if that's the plural lol) - totally legal, and good for some fun with TSA too.

the amount of attention this guy is getting, there is a real chance the 2016 issue of the FAR's might deal with this subject

What a dbag.

(Glad I don't have Instagram, lol)

Don't the feds deal with this already? As in; sterile cockpit and now PED use in the cockpit? What will they do, append the FAR with #seriously?

I'm baffled that those who post on social media (including APC) think there is such a thing as privacy.

Yup. Clearly a hack reporter with no substance. Unfortunately, pilots are the ones giving him attention.

Cmon man,

Have you ever used the restroom while in cruise?

You think the FA is "monitoring" anything? Lets not make this something it isn't.

Yes, because it's a terrible thing to enjoy your job, or aviation in general.

Why are you a tool if you think being a pilot is cool?

E6-B 12-11-2014 05:48 PM

I want to know how the one guy got a job at United at 26 dang!

prior121 12-11-2014 05:49 PM

Who cares, that article probably has 100 hits, all pilots from this forum.

What the h#ll is squartz anyways.

yes I have used the restroom in cruise but pulling out your phone while your doing your job isn't right. If its work related that's understandable but just for fun I think they should know better.

ILOVELAMP 12-11-2014 06:06 PM

I seriously don't see what's wrong with taking pictures in the cockpit as long as it is not causing a problem.

ZJBflight 12-11-2014 06:10 PM

regardless of whats in the article there was absolutely no reason that this guy needed to name names, He could have written the exact same crap article without trying to go after specific peoples jobs

I'm surprised by the number of youtube videos out there where there is all kinds of bs going on below 10,000, hard to believe.

In any event, use an old style digital camera instead of a cell phone (remember those?). Some of these older cameras still take better pics anyway because they are dedicated to the task.

Mount them if you can.

And of course only use them below 10,000 if you are on a 91 maintenance or repo flight.

Why? Your reason before was that you should be "monitoring."

What's the new reason?

Going to the restroom during cruise must be dangerous.

He didn't. He works for Expressjet. The idiot that wrote the article has no concept of regional airlines and saw United on the side of the E145.

What I am trying to say you should not be on your phone while your flying. Going to the restroom is a different story. Why do you need to go on your phone to take pictures.

So is a regular camera ok? I'm not sure where you're going with this. Is a camera ok but the camera function on an iphone is dangerous? What about a GoPro? Cameras are not prohibited by FARs outside of the sterile environment.

Now, if you are saying that using your phone's camera function for maybe a 7 second photo is for some reason dangerous, again, LEAVING THE FLIGHTDECK ENTIRELY to use the restroom must be exponentially more dangerous. Do you truly think there is a danger here or are you just saying "breaking a (possible)FAR is wrong?"

Ramprat 12-11-2014 06:50 PM

Hoban, the veteran American Airlines pilot, said he doesn’t even approve of reading books while the plane is on autopilot. “In a sense, you’re a systems manager at cruise altitude,” he said. “It happens more often than you think that you have to correct what the plane is doing.”
He sounds like a real treat to fly with as well

I am honestly usually a respectful captain but it ticks me off that this guy would release the names of these pilots. They just put their jobs in jeopardy just for the media to get a hay day off of it

You can be my wingman anytime. :D. That's right ice man, I am dangerous. I want some butts!

I can't get these top gun quotes out of my head after reading your posts. Glad I don't work around your company. You and people like you are part of the reason so many people hate their job at xjt.

what I am trying to say is the pilot who is flying the aircraft should not be video taping on any device that includes phones, camera and gopro now if your handling the radio I am fine with that. I never use the restroom if I am the one flying

So the PF should not be taking photos....I can certainly live with that I guess. A little over-cautious for me but certainly not unreasonable.

Good night.

I guess you classify anyone that who points out that what YOU'RE doing is not only stupid, but against the regs.

If everyone who did something like this got fired or his license pulled, it would dry up pretty quick.

TheFly 12-11-2014 07:12 PM

Wow, that didn't take long for a few hundred pilots to tear him a new one.

gringo 12-11-2014 07:13 PM

I'm not a lawyer, but I think the pilots listed in the "selfie" section have good cause to sue the sh!t out of this d-bag for slander and character defamation.

Those pictures were taken while parked at the gate, under external power. Prove it otherwise.
