Next time you have a FED in the jumpseat be sure and sip on some coffee while you taxi for takeoff. I do this almost every time and have only been called on it once. The FED "cleared his throat" and looked at the cup. I told him I had a physiological need to take a sip at that moment. I didn't hear about it again.
I'm sure that a gopro set up in cruise would not violate any FAR but might be a violation of company policy and against the wishes of your partner. There isn't much upside in doing it. I do like my circling to land in JNU video though. |

Awesome comments on the FB page. Not a single intelligent thought. Just hate and cocks. Hilarious.

Nice blog that I found covering the legality of selfies and camera usage. The writer writes for Flying as well...

Communist! Heretic!! Heathen!!! |
Funny, none of the Euro or middle eastern guys who do this stuff have taken anything down. I'm sure they're just as strict.
And a big X2 to the guy who said it helps inspire younger people to get into flying. Some of these guys are very creative and take some great shots. I don't see how having a GoPro set up to take automatic pics while you're below sterile is a big deal. |
Hey you know those free email signups for newsletters, bibles and stuff! Yup the author should not post his email address.... Merry Christmas! LMAO
......Oh, ok, I did not do it but man do I want to!!!! |
Just do it. Also some he might want a few porn site subscriptions. Or craigslists ads with his number and email in the casual encounters section

Yea it's all hypocrisy. Don't be a tool and post your selfies. Nobody cares about you being a pilot with the exception of your riddle buddies. Save them for your personal ego stroking collection to be viewed privately.
|
They look like the were taken with a 35mm camera. Everyone knows, pilots are too cheap to buy one of them newfangled camera phones

Not directed at you, but I'm going to throw out some good advice here... If you can't stop yourself from being a dumbass, from violating FARs, or from violating your companies policies - at least don't post the evidence in the public domain:confused: Strike that - post away and get culled from the herd:D. Darwinism works! |

How many crashes or incidents have resulted from taking in flight photos? That's what I thought. You and David Yankoffsky should hang out.

Let me know how this conversation works out for you if you ever interview for pilot job with an airline.

Any one of us can have a bad day at work, where despite our best efforts, our jobs could be placed at risk (there but for the grace of God go I?).
However, the linked photos are from pilots who opted-in to broadcasting that they (potentially) violate FARs. This was a 100% voluntary effort, and 100% preventable. Any heat those guys take is self-inflicted, it sucks, but they did it to themselves. It takes lots of hard work and dedication to earn the credentials to fly for a living, but when you finally get a line number and big watch, being a narcissistic tool may not be the answer. |

FAA ASIs have better things to do than troll social media looking for photos taken in flight and uploaded to Instagram.

Are you really this obtuse? When you apply to college - the admission staff looks at any social media sites they can find you on; when you apply for a job - your potential employer will probably look at any social media sites they can find you on; etc... Hell, most will require you to list the social media sites you use!

Precisely why I don't have social media, and I'm certainly not dumb enough to post any self incriminating pictures. This article is still tantamount to sitting on the street, taking video of people texting and driving, and contacting the police, news, and their employers about it. Vigilante justice by a pimply faced jealous wannabe, who takes selfies of himself in a CRJ lav. Carry on.
Could you please write some papers espousing your safety theories as well? We're all really tired of the restrictions on doing things that haven't caused us to crash before. |

Yeah except when a violation of Federal law is reported they are required to investigate. There's just that one little annoying tidbit.

Confession:
I got something out of my flight bag once. It took attention away from monitoring for several seconds. I've often been so engrossed pulling out, filing through pages and reading FAA mandated charts that I've had to say, "say again.." or ask "what fix did he give us"? I've also missed as a crew radio calls for funny jokes and interesting conversations. I've done a puzzle or game, ate some food, fixated on scenery out the window, read a thing, made non-critical banter below 10k. I don't know if I've flown with anyone who can't say the same. Let any required and non required duty be be done with wisdom, prudentcy and situational awareness. This is what prevents actions from becoming a safety issue, not some arbitrary regulation. Reading the release is probably more distracting than snapping a picture (head up vs head down), though both may not be appropriate at a given phase. And if it can be managed, look back and forth ever so often and scan and cross-check. As it relates to taking a picture, it can take all but a few seconds, and you can also stop midway and do a scan of the instruments, and back to the camera. Essentially it is the exact same thing as staring at something out the window for a few seconds, you're just viewing it through a screen and hitting a button. PEDs have a stigma, probably because of how it relates to driving. Viewing photons emitted from a PED is always reckless but viewing photons reflected from a city, sunset, mountain, piece of paper can be properly managed. Its perception, not reality. Be smart with with what-when-how you do anything in the flight deck, and for love, be smart about social media. |
