Eventually pot will be legal - Federal and State. Then what? Eventually they will have to come up with a standard like the 8hr rule with alcohol. But first they are going to have to figure out how long a person is actually under the influence after it is smoked. Maybe our unnamed pilot will be a guinea pig for the feds.

I can see the next HBO special coming up here. Pot smoking, biker gang banging, airline captain fights for legalization of pot while trying to maintain his family, career and status as an enforcer in the biker gang.
What should it be called?
"Skunk Winds and Iron the story of.........?"

As a Libertarian I support the legalization (regulated) of all substances, however I still strongly favor a no tolerance policy for those substances in specific employment fields. For that reason, I do not agree the legalization will automatically translate into approval. At least I sure hope I'm right.
Back during the Prohibition drinking a beer would get you arrested but you could stop at your local pharmacy for a nice soothing hit of cocaine for your frayed nerves, which wasn't illegal at the time.
Krudawg is right. Eventually we as a nation will pull our heads out of our assės regarding marihuana and admit what we've known all along- it's no different than drinking, something we do every day without second thought.

Aside from cultural or societal reasons, why would a regulatory agency with a responsibility to promote public safety relax rules related to drug or alcohol use?

Sounds like some testing on marijuana has taken place.
Before I start, I would like to say that I definitely do not condone the use of either alcohol or marijuana and moving around airplanes on the ground or in the sky. So it goes like this....I have flown with a guy that used to work at NASA, he was mainly involved in sim stuff. Some years back NASA conducted two controlled study's on both alcohol and marijuana use, using current airline pilots as the test subjects. The testing involved giving various amounts of alcohol in the first test and seeing how the pilot performed in the sim. I was told that the findings from the alcohol testing was that 2 servings of alcohol actually made the test subjects perform better than with 0 alcohol in there system. However once a 3rd serving of alcohol was given then the test subjects performed far worse. Now as far as the testing with the marijuana, he said that pilots were coming out of all sorts of woodwork to be part of the testing. The testing involved simply smoking marijuana and attempting to do our pilot stuff in the sim once again. However the finding in the marijuana testing was that, the pilots had no idea what the hell was going on in simulator. The test subjects were then given a 3 month get out of jail free card with there local wiz quiz team.
