Hell I hope you all buy us now
Honestly brah, wasn't trying to scrap... It is ironic that the Mayors talk of getting the right tourists here now, yet were all for SWA (or any airline) that could offer fare wars to create cheaper tickets.
When SWA understandably offered the introductory fares out of OAK, who did the Mayors think were gonna travel here? It certainly wasn't more affluent travelers waiting for $99 RT tickets. The Mayors made their own beds and are now trying to figure out a way to undue the tourists coming here who have more of a propensity to not respect the a'ina... (even though due to the looks of it, locals don't do much better respecting sh!t)

Just watched the Alaska airlines Hawaii reopening video. Good god do those “locals” love to pat themselves on the back every time they get a chance to. Ah yes, “Our diversity”. Tell me more, Hawaii. You’re about as diverse as mainland China. Never understood that claim of theirs.
Is this hyperbole? I’ve spent a fair amount of time in mainland China, they are over 90% Han Chinese.

You nailed it when you said at least 80% of Hawaii's problems have been self-inflicted. No one has accused Hawaii and the state government there of being the brightest bulbs in the bunch in good times, let alone bad. I truly hope Hawaiian Air survives them...
By comparison, Mexico said screw this virus, we'll take precautions, but we need the money and the visitors. Hawaii chose to shutter. Flights to Mexico have been packed on every airline. People aren't even trying to nonrev - they just buy full fare tickets. If I were going to Cabo, I wouldn't even bother trying to nonrev.
Like I said, I didn't have doubt that Hawaiian Air would survive the pandemic, but I do truly wonder if you'll survive your state government.

This is the Waikiki councilman trying to get a 2 test system or delay altogether...
5 minute video, with 2 compelling points in the video where his true colors are revealed...
In the beginning he states that "he looks Haole but he is Hawaiian, so forgive his pigeon" What does him being Haole or local matter? Proves the train of thought out here.
#2.. At about the 4:00 mark he says that they don't want the type of tourist who is gonna eat pizza from Costco....
And there it is.... There is a serious push to regulate the type of people over here. It's disgusting.. He also mentions something about diseased mainlanders etc..
RJS
I agree it'll be the gov't that ruins this place, along with the local thinking. I wasn't trying to dig at SWA. Only that the gov't here wanted new airlines here to stimulate lower fares (which creates more tourists, and more that normally couldn't afford a HI vacation) Pretty ironic since now they only want wealthy tourists in less numbers.

There has been talk of reducing the numbers of tourists for a while. Even Dunkerley spoke of seeking higher fare passengers, but it was difficult with the sweat capacity rising, yet the politicians just wanted more.
In 1989 there were about 6.5 million visitors and they spent about $18 billion (adjusted for inflation.) In 2019 there were over 10 million visitors and they spent about ........$18 billion.

The madness has to stop. Being this close to a pre Covid test opening and islands still talking about changing or outright opting out of the program is outrageous. The resort jobs alone for the locals is being hijacked. We're human (mostly)...people NEED to work. The damage to society is far out weighing anything Covid related.

I personally like Costco pizza. Have hit up the one in Kona, Honolulu on the way to Turtle Bay and Maui near the airport while vacationing.

Don't forget the chicken bake.
I get you're not bashing us, and frankly, I kinda miss those days. Hawaii selling out the local carriers is also nothing new... you may not have been in Hawaii when Aloha tanked. The state was gushing over go! and look what happened. Now they're gushing over Southwest, when instead they could have had 2 local airlines maintaining dominance in the market.
However, Aloha's demise enabled Hawaiian to thrive and prosper because it created a huge vacuum that needed to be filled. It would really be a tragedy if Hawaiian's demise happened purely due to state politics. I think Hawaiian has become a great airline, and I think the Hawaii state and city politicians should be held accountable for this.
