During the interviews last decade I figured I was about 100 deep in the pool. PD recently told a Higher Power class that about 1/2 the poolies have dropped out. Why someone would voluntarily drop out of the pool (regardless of their intent to take a class date or not) is beyond me. Anyways, not sure where that puts me but I would hope to be in class #2 or #3.

I am one of the recent HPA grads the PD relayed that info to. I heard it first hand. Three folks from the PD visited our class. They told us it had been so long since they hired pilots, they had been farmed out to help other departments. They said the pool was around 200 folks in 2008. It has dwindled down to around 100. Further more, the PD has yet to re-accomplish new background checks on those folks (2 years is a lot of time to hang yourself). Sounds like there will be some attrition due to the background checks. The three folks from the PD were awsome and up front with information! They pulled no punches. Sure would be a great place to work.

Hey Avgwhitemale--Who spoke at HPA? A call to Peps Dept the other day and their response was nothing has changed. Still 200 poolies and standard answer of maybe hiring next year. We are all hoping they start hiring sooner than later. It is good to have food with your meals.

You would be amazed fellas. I know three SWA poolies who returned to active duty and are locked up by the pilot bonus. I know another pool type who is now a full time UAV pilot and has no flight currency. I also know a pool guy who lost his pilot qual and is now a Raytheon employee. Five down....I don't think these folks are the exception. Incidentally, the fellow who is flying uav's just picked up his second DUI in two years (ouch).

Once SWA does begin hiring again, they'll have to take care of hiring their squadron buddies first, so it's going to be a while. Because they pay the most, SWA has become the go-to place for the "No Guts, No Air Medal" crowd. Long gone are he days when the "Hot Stick/**** Hot" crowd stick up their ass Colonels went to UAL, DAL, NWA, etc. FedEx and SWA are the carriers of choice now. (For laughs, check out how many guys have their squadron nickname written on their leather jacket name tags.)
