This guy had an attitude problem. He couldn't in a nice way tell me that I had the wrong pants and to fix it. That's all was needed. Instead, he made this big deal about it.

But at the end of the phone call, I turned his condescending nasty attitude back against him when I pointed out that he was the one who was supposed to give me the approved vendor list. Once he hemmed and hawed, I kept saying "but it clearly says that you will provide me a list".

It was funny. Just to CYA, I stopped by and told my CPO at LGA. Everybody laughed about it ... and I was in my cotton pants at the time.

It is funny to a point, may be even ridiculous.

But I do thing we got to look good. If the shade of the color is off a little people can see it, especially in different light.
I see too many pilots around the airports, not from DAL for the most part, who look too trashy.
Please understand me right, I am not a fashion police either, but there should be a line in substituting Dockers or the amount of grease on pants or coffee drops on the shirts.

It will be much easier to convince the public that we need 40% pay restoration if we not only fly great, but also look, act and converse with our customers well.
Feel free to disagree, but I don't think "they don't pay me enough" is the right answer.

Nothing personal, KC; I realize your point is totally different.

Pool of military candidates

I apologize if this has been asked before. Back in 2007 (after hiring had just stopped) I received an email that said I was in a pool of military candidates selected to receive an interview, pending my date availability and future hiring needs.
Has anyone else received the same letter? If so, did you get an invite yet? Is the current hiring department weighing this email at all?

Thanks!

It's all timing

Wow. I was hired by NWA in 1987, and offered employment by PAA, AMR and DAL. I had considerably less time and qualifications than those being interviewed and hired now.

I flew with Captains who were hired in 1965 with less than 300 hours TOTAL time.

My point is, it's very competitive now because no one is hiring, and a few airlines still have significant numbers of pilots still on the street.

Be patient and good luck to all applicants. I hope you can grab that brass ring!

Despite all the b1tching, it's still the best way I know to make a living:)

Oh, and why did I select NWA over all others? They had the highest percentage of WB to NB, No B scale, owned all their jets, had no outstanding debt (paid off the Republic merger in 2 years:eek:) Man they were going places.

Fast forward 3 years to the Chechi LBO, and the subsequent slide to BK.

Roll your dice, take your chance, enjoy the ride!

acl65pilot 07-23-2010 02:33 PM

NWApoolie, maybe you are too qualified.

Just to make sure, is you application published on AirApps? In needs to be published for DAL to see it.

NWAPoolie 07-23-2010 06:49 PM

I think it is. I did not pay but I don't think you need to acl

acl65pilot 07-24-2010 04:52 AM

You do not need to pay if you are only targeting one airline.

todd1200 07-24-2010 03:24 PM

Is it true that RJ FOs are getting invited to interviews? A guy I flew with said his previous FO just interviewed -- she had zero TPIC and about 4000 TT.

acl65pilot 07-24-2010 05:34 PM

Some are but they normally are part of the channel program that DAL set up with Western Michigan. IE well vetted by DAL.

BM,

I got that same email in April 08. I didn't initially get an invite when the first round of emails started going out in late June/early July of this year. I got the invite though on July 5, a day after my application was updated with an internal LOR via AirlineApps. Not sure if that tripped the invite or if it was coincidence. FWIW, after much thought I ended up declining the interview given my current employment status.

Hope this helps.

Interviews postponed 1 year?

My buddy just got a call saying his interview was being pushed back 1 year due to more people coming back from LOAs than expected. Anyone else received this call?

The competitive minimums are lower for females right now. I've heard this from more than one source. The women interviewing are more than qualified for the job, but they are less qualified than the men currently interviewing. It is what it is.

So we are going the way of United now just to hire a few more females?

I wouldn't go that extreme. The above post says a female interviewed with just over 4,000 hours and no PIC time. A few years ago when everyone was hiring, males were getting interviewed with those exact same qualifications.

Apparently calls went out this afternoon. The phrasing is "when hiring resumes next year."

They already have slots for 300 returnees and newhires? Next year... something is going on. I smell preferential hiring for Alaska furloughees.

Know when he was scheduled? I'm up on Tuesday and didn't get a call. Please lord, let this mean I'm safe.

RockyBoy 07-24-2010 09:44 PM

Didn't they do this the last time they stopped hiring in 08? Not too cool to get guys spooled up with an interview then call them and tell them to study for another year. Hopefully it's just due to alot of bypassers calling up and wanting in this last week. If anything is going on, my bet is that it has to do with the Compass/Mesaba fiasco. I think they just had another super secret MEC meeting on the issue so maybe they are gonna fill up this year with bypassers and flow-ups.

In any case, next year is only 5 months away so maybe they'll start interviewing again in Jan for the summer 2011 schedule which is when they need to hire to have guys in place for the summer.

yes, it sucks we didn't get called. The fact is we were offered a job by NWA and NWA is no longer calling the shots. Delta doesn't owe us anything and the email we got from NWA said if we want to work there we need to apply to delta. Your posts come across pretty bad and that won't do anything other than **** off some people that can guarantee you won't get a call.

viper548,

For what it's worth, it sounds like you're taking a bad situation in stride with a good attitude. Not that it will do you any good, but I hope that you get a phone call soon. Hang in there, I'm always happy to buy the rounds for new hires.

Wow, what's a "walmart greeter" making now a days? I guess you do have stability, and access to all those "cougars" that are your coworkers.....:)

I got the call too and was told everyone in the first week of August was getting the call. Option is to keep your current date and interview anyway. Or get first calls next year to come interview.

I did laugh when I read that luv. When I left the Navy in 08 and hiring stopped I took a contractor job that has since turned into a GS position and I'm still flying in the reserves(Hornets). Life is pretty good. I'm home every night I dont choose to be gone on travel or on a training detachment with the navy and I'm home on the weekends. That said, I gave it much thought but in the end QOL won out, not to mention the stability/job security and 2 Gov't pensions.

I suppose Wal-Mart is always an option!

Just curious what you decided to do...any benefits to either one?

hockeypilot44 07-26-2010 09:56 AM

So they've stopped interviewing before anyone new actually hit the property. Not very reassuring.

Original estimates were for about 150 off-the-street hires this round to hit the 305 hiring number after flows and furlough returns. Interviewing 12 a day, 4 days a week for five weeks with about a 60% success rate puts the number hired after this week at just less than 150 (and 60% is just an estimate based of anecdotal info.) I'm not surprised they held to the 305 number going into the seasonal flying pulldown. It is still the only number put out through official sources. Anything else is (mostly uninformed) speculation and rumors.

Don't think there are really any benefits to either way really. I chose to just go ahead and do it. I am already in the mindset for it.

dragon 07-26-2010 12:55 PM

Good luck, I think it's a wise decision - why go through the pain twice?

Will 07-27-2010 01:55 AM

Anybody know how many months they are going to run classes, I have heard Aug-Dec.

Sounds like you've got it figured out!

I only said walmart greeter because that is what you list as your "currentt position", so I thought there must be some benefit over the DAL job.....

Where do you live for the contractor job? IOW, do you have to travel for your reserve gig?

Elvis90 07-27-2010 01:43 PM

Just got the call for a 6 Sep training date!

KC10 FATboy 07-27-2010 01:48 PM

Congrats. What is your background Elvis90?

Elvis90 07-27-2010 01:51 PM

Retiring from the USAF after 20 years, flying the B-1 mainly.

Gotta fire up the Lisa Marie and take it Denver for that one.

PinnacleFO 07-27-2010 03:24 PM

Anyone know if since they have stopped interviewing will delta be at that career fair in august? I went to the one in chicago a couple years ago and because they weren't hiring, they were not able to accept resumes. Also, would they even accept resumes if they do everything on airline apps?

Wuzzo 07-27-2010 03:25 PM

9 of 12 today. Good mix of regional and mil. Oct dates. Word is "excess" interviewees to be pooled for classes in 2011.

The GS position(formerly contractor with Northrop Grumman) is in Norfolk, VA, and my reserve job is at NAS Oceana with the FRS. All in all no commute minimal travel unless I want to so the pros outweighed the cons in my situation for QOL.

acl65pilot 07-27-2010 07:08 PM

If they are offering to go in to a pool, take it, you never know if and when they will need new bodies. Frankly it is dynamic and I would do it. Just my .02
