I bet those folks sure do have some good interview stories.

I did the HR right after Johnso29 did and when the interview Capt came and got me for my panel interview he says, (this was pre-merger announcement mind you)

Him: So do you know Johnso29?
Me: Yes sir i do, we work together at our current regional.
Him: I bet he's sweating right now!
Me: oh really?
Him: Yeah apparently he wants to be a pilot for Delta Air Lines!
Me: Oh no (secretly thinking doh!!)
Him: Oh dont worry he did fine :D

My buddy just got the invite last night...suprisingly, he isn't even available until next April...I don't know the industry very well I guess, but I would think with thousands of extremely qualified candidates, they wouldn't call people yet who are not available for 9 another months...thoughts??

My thought is Delta wants military guys and there are very few qualified military guys applying.

DedRecon 07-08-2010 02:56 AM

Is it possible they're building a pool from and then offering class dates from there based on availability?

Elvis90 07-08-2010 03:42 AM

Offered conditional employment with Delta! Military pilot, >4000 hours, 43 years old, retiring from the Air Force.

Fewer and fewer pilots are entering and leaving the military. Last I heard over 40% of usaf academy grads are flying UAVs.

This, and the overall level of compensation is crap.

Back in 2000, you could walk out of your military gig, into a job that paid six figures in 3 years working less than half the month. With a fully paid pension and health care. You'd be nuts to walk away from that.

But the thing that the military brings to applicants that most civil guys don't have (and I AM a civil guy, this is props to my Mil bros) is that by the time they retire/separate from the military, they are pretty much qualified "middle managment", and can step in to almost any role needing that kind of person, whether it's an airline, power plant or even a carpet factory (assuming there are any left in the US).

With a little elbow grease, they can be making as much, if not more, than the current compensation the airlines provide without ANY of the uncertainty, without any of that yukky labor/union stuff and can be "their own man" with a completely portable skill set that you can use to ratchet up your compensation regardless if your company succeeds or goes bankrupt.

So the real question is "why would ANYONE in the military even bother with the airlines?".

Nu

Looking at training Sept 6th or so, likely in the MD-88 or A320. Junior bases are MSP, DTW & NYC.

Met with the psychologist yesterday, no surprises, went quick.

On the list of things to bring... it says "if necessary" W2's for the last 10 years to verify periods of unemployment. Would it be "necessary" if you have two different gaps of a month in the last 10 years?

12W20 07-08-2010 09:17 AM

Before I had finished my app on airline apps, I got an email saying Delta had reviewed it and my employment history and education information was incomplete. I had not hit the "submit" button yet. Now I have completed the information, but the site won't send my app because I don't have a FAA medical yet (I'm on flying status in the AF). I have called an AME for an appointment, but can't get in for a week or two. I suppose getting the medical will allow me to submit, I was just surprised I was emailed by Delta prior to hitting "submit".

Did anyone else have this happen?

UnusualAttitude 07-08-2010 09:36 AM

What about the question that says "Have you ever completed an application with Delta?" Would you say "Yes" to that once you are finished? Or is the application incomplete until you sign it in front of an interviewer?

When I applied with NWA I cut and paste my resume to the website, and it turns out it still said seeking position of pilot with Delta Air Lines!! DOH!!! It was fun laughing that one off with the NWA interview panel.

It's even more funny, because now I am a DAL pilot!!! :p

Like FedEx applicants sending their documentation in using UPS.

You're the ER pilot and Alabama booster you know... :D I'm just a lowly 88 guy. But if KG wants to buy, I mean he ought to be rolling in the dough as an Auburn slum lord.

I wish I could, I am baby sitting tonight, girl's night out and daddys night in wrestling the 18 month old, wiping noses, wiping off the couch because I didn't wipe off the nose and general disaster making following by a desperate song of "clean up, clean up, everybody do you share."

FWIW, Vortex or Twisted Taco.

I'd bring it if you have gaps. I'd rather have too much info than not enough when it comes to interview time. fwiw

Hi everyone, just a questions, does army helo time look good to Delta? Does that help things out to get noticed? Also, if your still in the reserves, does that weigh negatively or positivity with Delta?

Also don't show up to a GM plant to meet with someone driving a Ford rental car.

BTW, it would be funny to be the UPS man assigned to delivering packages to FedEx's hq.

Question, about the college requirement. Will they waive it if you weren't raised in the U.S., read UK here, UK military experience (tanks), 20 years of living in the US, a perfect record, well loved, die hard American, thousands of hours of part 121 PIC with a majority as a LCP time, time as an ALPA committee chairman, and a couple of years at AirTran?

I mean they're school system isn't exactly the same as ours and some folks come from the school of hard knocks and, not surprisingly, seem to excel.

acl65pilot 07-08-2010 01:33 PM

FtB;
Last time that depended on the school. In Europe most of the colleges are three year programs and that nixed the possibility for an interview for one of my friends. The words came right out of the New Hire Lead pilot's mouth.

Now if you notice the wording of what type of four year degree is required, it has changed. It no longer states that the Bachelor degree needs to be approved my the US Board of Education. It just states accredited or something like that, which in reality is a huge change.

Well, that means that they want you but your application was incomplete. Where do you live that you need to wait 2 weeks for an AME appointment? You should be able to find one willing to do it tonight.

You're in a good position if they sent you this email but you need to get with the program. Get all of your FAA types, certificates, and medical squared away before applying somewhere. The more boxes you can check and squares you can fill, the better your application is.

Remember, there can be no break in employment. A friend of mine got the same letter. He found the mistake. Updated his app. They called him the next morning for an interview.

Delta counts helo time. They prefer Navy helo time, because naval aviators are better looking. So grow a moustache or something. :D

During my interview, I was up front about my reserve commitment. No problem.

Concur, of the 9 military members in my newhire class, 7 were/are reservists. Delta is very proud of its military members and goes out of its way to support them.

Mustache not necessary, its overkill Naval Aviators are sexy enough without it. Got to give those poor Zoomies a chance at the ladies:D.

DedRecon 07-09-2010 06:18 AM

How is Delta in regards to reserv duty during your first year on probation? I owe my unit a short deployment that I really don't want to back out of.
