American Eagle Airlines is excited to announce that we have adjusted our current hiring minimum. Our hiring goals are expected to exceed 670 pilots in 2011, and we foresee hiring to continue into 2012. Our new hiring minimums are as follows:
  • 500 Total Time with 50 Multi-Engine
  • Successful completion of the Recruitment Process
  • Successful completion of ATP’s Regional Jet Standards Course (Paid in full by American Eagle Airlines)
  • Two year signed commitment to fly for American Eagle Airlines
For pilots who have 800 total time and 100 multi will not be subject to the Regional Jet Standards Course or the signed two year commitment. If you are interested in a pilot position with American Eagle, please email us at [email protected].

I jumpseat on American Eagle, SkyWest, Compass & Mesaba, and the stories are all the same: they can't fill their classes with enough new hires, and crews are getting lots of extra pay due to overtime required to offset the shortage of crews. I'm told that the companies are canceling some flights as a result. The pilot shortage is now real at the regionals, and regional flying will shrink as every major airline & cargo company hires next year.

Only one way to fix the shortage. Park Planes.

I don't understand this statement. Not being sarcastic by any means. Are you saying just because the majors start hiring they will take back flying that was done by the regionals?

I'm saying regionals won't have enough pilots to live up to their contracts, as regional pilots get pulled out & hired by majors.

Maybe, the Regionals may be able to get the First Officers, easy to get, just lower the minimuns, easy to train in 2-3 months, 4 at the most for Type & 1-2 months for IOE, so 6 months at the most ...

MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION .... where will the captains come from.... Majors & international airlines (Emirates & Qatar & Singapore) will take the all the captains who want to go first, then the super senior co-pilots, NEXT, in the 1-2 years to come, all the co-pilots the reagionals are hiring today & training .......

How will ameriflight & others like them find their guys......???

....But that only works until end of 2012, then there is no way guys are going to get 1500hrs in in a couple months...

I have another idea to fix it. Pay above the poverty level. You can make more at McDonalds then a first officer. I say park the planes.

All in favor?? Aye!! Unfortunately I don't foresee that changing anytime soon... There's an argument for paying new FOs more once they need to meet the 1500 hrs to get hired, but where will that money likely come from? The airline won't want to spend any more money on payroll then they already do, so they'll likely try to pay senior CAs less so they can pay the junior FOs more. That has to happen through a change in contract, and I doubt many (if any) CAs would vote for lesser pay.

Huh??? I can only speak for myself but the first pay check of the month is usually the smallest, (no per diem, over block, ect) the second paycheck includes all of this and averages 1500-2500 dollars take home. So each month I take home a grand total of roughly 2500=slow month to 3500=good month. Thats 30,000yr to 42,000yr. On 1st yr FO pay. Where does a starting Mcdonalds employee make that????

BTW, I hold a 94hr line and each month I over block with max TAFB.
