An Alaska pilot had a certain number of silver bullet recommendations (1/yr?) they could give. So if your application came accompanied by one, it meant someone at Alaska was willing to put their name and rep behind you.

How it was explained to me anyway

What are the chances of someone from the Southeastern United States getting hired by Alaska? Obviously willing/planning to move but currently residing in the SE (and not SE Alaska).

Silver Bullet is a sponsorship program like FDX uses, and like the Blue Dart JBLU guys use. I think if an AS pilot uses his silver bullet for you, it carries a lot of weight in getting an interview.

You're golden. AS is nepotism central. Heck, you'll be an IP the day you get hired and BCP within 5 years. Probably be CP before you're 40.

Strictly 401K for new hires.

Junior base? PDX, SEA? Junior trips? Are they ANC red-eye turns in the winter and Mexico in the summers?
Junior base is ANC. However, that's not all bad. The flying is fun and the pilots and f/as up there are a pretty good group in general. As in all small bases, everybody tends to take care of each other. You won't see SEA/PDX/LAX anytime soon, so IF you get an interview, tell them you are psyched about living in Alaska.

14,000TT, 2 types, 5,000TPIC, 1,500 B737 SIC, 1,000 Part 135 in Alaska.
Your Alaska experience is a plus. Go for it!

Well, I was in ORF when I got hired.

That's encouraging! Thanks FF. I've been updating my resume every month on the website, even though they aren't taking applications right now. i don't know if that will help at all but it's worth a shot when they do start accepting apps again.

Thanks for the info. A few other items...

What is the 401k match?......oops...just saw it on APC...13.5%.

I'm a bit concerned with the rumors of Horizon starting to fly within the state of AK. Not only have I heard ANC-FAI, but also flying in SE. Could this possibly lead to furloughs if QX started flying all over SE? Also a bit concerned about competition to Hawaii when/if Southwest starts a Hawaiin operation.

What are the medical benefits like during retirement? Do they still have the same premiums as an active employee or do they increase? Are medical benefits even offered to retirees?

Wish I had a crystal ball that actually worked!

ANC would be A-OK with me! Just got back from a trip to SE and miss the state terribly.

I would not worry about Horizon flying in Alaska. They might get some stuff but there are many a problem to be worked out. Also, I think the company wants to redeploy the 737 used on the low density Alaska routes to larger markets. It will work out well if the essential services subsidies get eliminated.

I believe the EAS program cuts will be for places like Escanaba where people can drive out. Places like WRG, PSG, YAK, CDV and ODK will require continued EAS subsidies.
