Your a Captain, right? He was a real junior F/O at airtran, right? Otherwise, he was blowing smoke for you. No one is happy with they way our new employer has treated us.

Nah, I was just a jumpseater. Wouldn't have known him from any other southwest operator. He elected to bring up the subject. He expressed a positive experience. Sorry you feel that way.

Capt Jeff's "No one is happy with they way our new employer has treated us." statement is spot on. Haven't run into ANY AT pilots who are happy with the way we have been treated. Zero, Nada, Zilch. The guy you ran into was just being polite and politically correct. Trust me, besides getting a pay raise (if he was an FO...AT Capt's are getting a big pay cut), this guys QOL took a big hit and I can 90% guarantee you he is having to commute. Chances are he is probably not going to upgrade to Capt.....ever. On the other hand, maybe the waterboarding was successful and he truly is happy.

I think we would all be surprised if there were to be any hiring at all. From what we see, heck even Swapa has mentioned, we are a little fat on pilots. Perhaps the part 117 rules will impact this but not so sure.
What I would suggest is for anyone considering SWA to do their homework. We don't have the retirement numbers the other airlines have which in turn means very slow movement. Upgrade to captain can be 20 years for a new hire today, I think our most junior are staring at that now (been here almost 7 years and looking at another 12 for CA if I'm lucky and willing to commute west coast). With all that said, for now we do have good pay and bennies which would make a lot folks comfortable with the long sit in the right seat.

The reason for much of the recent unhappiness from the AirTran Pilots stems from the fact that they are being put into transition classes with a disregard of their of their AirTran seniority, or their preference.
When SWA closed the MKE and MCO Pilot Bases, they let the junior pilots there transition out of seniority, instead of moving them to ATL and letting the more senior ATL FO's transition when their number came up. Some of these pilots were hired post-merger, which makes it even more egregious.
At the same time, they are also forcing the Captains from those bases to transition, instead of transfer back to ATL, which means senior Captains (14+ years in some cases) are being forced to transition, while more junior Captains are able to remain in their seats in ATL for another year or more.

SWAPA is currently in negotiations with management for their next contract. Conventional wisdom says there probably won't be any hiring in the near future but hiring means upward progression for all pilots on the list so, hiring rumors are normal during these negotiations.

A former AT FO and I were jumpseating the other day. He was a great guy with a good attitude, had about 7 years at AT as a 737 FO. Went over, became MCO based and finally got to move home to MCO. His only, only gripe was how SWA ran profiles and callouts. He seemed very fortunate.
If hiring does happen, will their still be a TPIC requirement? None of the big 3 majors require it anymore.
