Quote: When is your class date?

It’s really about timing and how senior you are in class. If you will have a choice or not. If you are at the bottom of the bus or on the front wave of a 190 hiring spree.

When you get to class ask how many more of each seat are going to be filled by new hires before the next system bid.

If they are going to fill 30-40 190 spots and only 10 Airbus I would highly recommend the 190 for the first two years. In all likelihood in this scenario you would out earn and out QOL your Airbus classmates until your AC lock expires.

If they are done filling most of the 190 vacancies pick the Airbus.

I can’t really speak to 320 reserve usage in BOS but as a junior reserve expect to become proficient at landing in Puerto Rico and the Dominican in the middle of the night.

The 190 gets put to bed by midnight. Something to be said for that.

They better- shrinking the JFK 190 can only last so long

I wouldn’t be shocked to one day see the jfk 190 base gone, actually I expect it.

Would a 190 guy based in JFK still be seat locked if that were to happen?

A base/equipment closure would likely happen only after a CBA. And the language in the CBA would dictate how displacement would go. So I don't think there's any real way to accurately answer that question until a CBA is implemented.

A lot of guys I've talked to (and I tend to agree) think the JFK 190s will be limited/gone eventually, and BOS and FLL will be the 190 bases. Who knows. It's a fool's errand trying to guess what will happen in 1-5 years here (or any airline) or make any life decisions based on those guesses. And a contract with displacement language is fairly important to these kinds of potential moves. But with the airline taking deliveries of only A321s, and having a slot/gate restricted JFK, it seems like JetBlue Express will need to leave to make room for mainline at JFK.

There is 24 BOS E190 vacancies left on the last system bid.

There is only 5 BOS 320 FO.

There is a ton of jfk 320 vacancies but you said you were gonna live in BOS area so unless you want to commute.

If it were me I would choose the 190. All that could change on the next bid that comes out in DEC but we know almost certainly those 24 E190 spots will be filled by new hires.

It would depend on what is in the CBA.
So if that ever gets done I could see the 190 base going away. But I don't think it will be anytime soon.

My wife and I have a baby and my wife returned to working full time. I am on the 320 in Boston and bid reserve in order to be home as much as I can. Once you figure out a system that works for you it isn't that bad. The 10 hour 3 days that people dislike can work in your favor if you want to be home more (leave late day 1, gone 24 hours, land at 6am on day 3). They are terrible for your sleep and mood but eat up 3 days of reserve and if you never are going over 75 hours of credit, them being worth 10 hours doesn't affect you much. They aren't always to the Dominican and you can sometimes get them to PHX or SLC which are much better layovers. When it comes to the Dominican I don't mind Santiago but I really dislike Santo Domingo, I've heard guys on the line tell me differently so it is all what you make of it. Our reserve system will completely change with the CBA. Right now you can only bid for AM or PM (doesn't mean you will get it) and you get your assignment at noon for the next day. This summer was a mess and the reserve start times were late coming out for like 2 or 3 months it felt like. This sucked for commuters but won't affect you much living in base. You will work mostly on your last day of reserve doing some turn to ATL, ORD, BNA, or wherever that will get you back to Boston pretty late. This sucks as a commuter but again, isn't as terrible if you live in base. I'd gladly answer any more questions you have about reserve life in BOS if you want to send me a PM.

Same here but on the 190. PM reserve on the 190 essentially means you'll be off that day as long as the weather is good with no broken late pairings that you'll dread seeing. Last day of reserve, just like the Airbus, get ready to be called for a late turn. I think it's still easier to get senior on reserve on the 190 in Boston, but maybe that has changed. Also usually easy to swap to get weekends off during the slow months...no idea what the Airbus/BOS grid looks like in the slow months though.
