Kalitta Air now accepting FO applications
#3801
Just received a call from the assistant chief pilot of Kalitta and have a questions. I've been reading most of these boards, but was hoping someone from Kalitta could PM me to discuss. I'm 45 and been with 2 different regionals for a grand total of 15 years. I have apps out everywhere and in 2 years have a flow to AA, but AA is last on my list. I'm married with 2 kids and don't want to move because we are settled down and my kids love their school. The home basing is awesome and I wish more companies would follow suit. I'm already on the road 20 to 21 days a month with 2 days off in-between trips and my commute is rough. Just wanted some help making a decision and knowledge is key. So, anyone out there from Kalitta would be kind enough, please PM me.
Thanks and Fly Safe!!

Homebasing is amazing. You never have to worry about how to get to work or missing a connection. They aren’t your problem.
The pay is good, and you will most likely break guarantee by a large margin. If you’re willing to work an overtime day or two a month, you can make a very large paycheck. The downside is the retirement is awful. The legacies kick the crap out of our 401k matching, and some have pensions. You will have to do your own investing for retirement to get anywhere near those guys.
The schedule is 16 on (with 1 Travel day) and the rest of the month off. Plan on being gone the entire 16 days. If you dont like being on the road for that long, go to the legacies.
The flying is incredible. You will circle the globe several times a month. You will experience different cultures and food. You will have some insane stories after a few years that the legacies will have a hard time matching. We generally have a day off in each of our layover cities, so if you don’t get out and explore the world, you’re missing out. You won’t get that flying narrow bodies domestically.
You will work ridiculously long days, and fly really long legs. Your circadian rythym will be non existent, and **** off the family when you get home and can’t sleep for more than 4 hours straight. You’ll get used to showing up to the plane exhausted, and napping in the bunk.
So in summary, if you are purely motivated by money, go to the legacies. If you want an amazing flying experience, and see the world come to K4. The people are (for the most part) happy, and good crews. The money is good, and you’ll essentially fly a giant RV around the world with 4 other people.

K4 and regional flying are 2 completely different animals. That being said it really depends on what your goals are, and what is going to make you happy.

Don't get me wrong I'm really happy here and probably won't go anywhere unless I get the call from brown or purple, but we have a lot to work to do.
We can't blinded by payrates both present and in the future and must continue to work towards legacy workrules, retirement, and QoL in future CBA's.
I'd love to finish my career here, hopefully we can make that a reality.

Most CA’s are making what? 220 to 290k a year? How much does that lag behind the big five? Where I live, that’s, “ I’m riaaaaccccchhhhh bitcccchhh”.
Yes, I agree we need to always push forward, but at least for now, we have the tools at our disposal to make a good life for ourselves. It’s still better than 98% of the worlds population. Especially considering that people hired within the past two years are going to see 200k plus with very little time invested at the company. I know the others who’ve been here a while are trying their best to catch up on their retirement, to make up for pay and retirement disparity from the old contract.
I am with you, wish I had a crystal ball.

every rotation will be different... I have flown about every other day (realize some of our days stretch out to 20 hours and beyond) ... I have 4 days left.. and will fly on three...and commute home on the 4th....
you arent going to fly everyday.. first.. you just cant.. the FAA says so... 2nd it just doesnt work that way. I would bet right now with the amount of flying we are doing guys will fly probably 8-10 days of their rotation... throw in a 2-3 1/7s and a commercial DH or two.. and you have your rotation. YMMV... I thought I was going to have a mid 80s pay hours month.. but this bit at the end will push me well over 100 pay hours.

Thanks. Are the hotels in places where one can go out for a run/walk? Or is it more often too unfamiliar or dangerous? I grew to like having different running routes in various destinations in 135/regionals. It'd be tough for me to be stuck indoors or in hotel gyms for 16 days.
There’s places in the USA you wouldn’t want to go for a walk in, same everywhere else. As different as every place is, it is also the same, by the same margin.

Most Americans have a very warped sense of the rest of the world. This job has showed me how beautiful the rest of the world is, and that 99.9% of people don’t want to kill you. I stay indoors a lot by choice, because I choose to sleep a lot.
