So what's going on over there? Raising new hire pay unilaterally? Me thinks that is a big no -no
Kalitta Air Crewmembers,
Management’s disrespect for the collective bargaining process and crewmembers that generate the revenue has finally caught up to them. Now they will have to answer for their mismanagement in federal court unless they immediately change course.
As we all know, Kalitta Air has big problems. It can’t hire or retain pilots under the current collective bargaining agreement. Pilots have lost confidence in management. Our pay is too low, our working conditions are oppressive and the management team is out of touch. There is only one solution – a new contract ratified by the membership that management actually follows instead of violating.
Rather than following the law, respecting the pilot group and bringing negotiations over a new contract to a successful conclusion, this week management announced it would unilaterally change pay rates for new hires over the union’s objection and in violation of federal law. As a result, your Executive Council and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters sent a letter to the company (a copy which is available by clicking here) demanding that the company restore the status quo until we reach agreement on a new contract or, in the alternative, are released for self-help by the National Mediation Board (NMB).
Make no mistake about it – we have proposed to substantially increase pay for all Kalitta crewmembers, new hires included. That’s absolutely necessary to attract and retain pilots in a tight labor market, but it’s not enough to resolve all of the problems at Kalitta. We also need significant improvements in our benefits and working conditions, all of which are included in a new contract.
How has management responded to our proposals? You’ve read our recent reports. You can sum up management’s bargaining conduct in a word – delay. They waste hours, days, weeks and months asking why we want to change the current contract, complaining about the “number of words” in our proposals, refusing to respond to our questions and information requests, telling us they aren’t capable of administering rules that their competition has been following for years and even yelling at us (yes, laughably, they apparently think that helps their cause) instead of dealing with the reality of what pilots are demanding and expect to receive in their next contact.
It’s time they show the pilots of Kalitta the respect they deserve. Talk is cheap. The contract you expect and deserve is not. We are taking a stand for every Kalitta crewmember. We are prepared to use every legal and economic weapon permitted by law to right this wrong, protect crewmembers, the contract and our union.
Your union leadership is waiting for management’s response to our letter. Our lawyers are also preparing legal papers for obtaining an injunction against the company. We remain ready and look forward to returning to NMB supervised bargaining. In the interim, we will keep you informed of all developments. Your union will hold management accountable to you and the law.

"Your Union Leadership...?"
From what I've been told, your wonderful Chairperson was OK with this raise for new hires against the contract. Nice "Leadership."
I find it interesting how things have gone WWAAAYYYY downhill since JK was voted out (by an underwhelming 30% of total voters voting). Your main negotiators have left, your committees seem to be playing musical chairs, and now this??? Sure, you gave the company a C&D letter, but without a real leader in the ranks, will the file will follow suit. I can see it now, "Kalitta's chairperson of the Teamsters Local 1224 crosses picket line." Film at 11.
With all this going on at K4, WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO BE HIRED ON THERE?
PB, D.C. S .,MH, SR and all [sic]there little stooges (including, probably, SN) are really some of the DUMBEST people I've ever met. When your Chief Pilot signs his letters with "Get 'er Done," you know you are at a classy outfit with forward thinking people at the helm.
God help you all.. No, wait: HELP YOURSELVES by getting a majority vote to strike or some sort of job action in response to their breaking the status quo during negotiations. Anyone have the ability to get DHL involved? I'm sure they would be really pleased to hear how dumb their freight forwarder is.
