Baffles me in regards to competition.
Every other business seems to be cutthroat in regards to competition and hiring key talent working for them. The knuckleheads running the airlines decide to hire from the own system base, their regionals.
If I was Doug Parker for instance, I'd chit can the flow thru program and offer interview invites to every Spirit pilot without an armed robbery conviction. Once I'd cleared the list of legit problem children, I'd offer indoc class dates to something like 500-600 of their Captains on 30 June and take 6-9 months to complete the rest of their training. Money spent awaiting Sims is money well spent.
Your competition Doug? They've just been euthanized. Let Delta and UAL do the same to Frontier. JetBlue and the rest. Reducing hiring from the regional partners will be offset by the increased flying by destroying your competitors.

Yes, I've had similar thoughts.
But a targeted program aimed at damaging a competitor (vice just filling classes) would not pass muster with the trust-busters.
Targeting a specific company's employees is probably a no-go unless they have some skill you can't get elsewhere.
Paying them to sit idle for an extended period while "waiting for training" would not pass muster.
The can hire all the LCC pilots they want (free country), they just have to be careful about picking on one company.
On the other hand...they are ENTIRELY within their rights to implement military style STOP LOSS at the regionals and stop hiring their own feeder pilots, to avoid damaging their regional business partners. I know this has happened in the past.

Left it out of my post, but I wondered if it stepped on some regulatory toes. Sounds like it might if done stupidly.
But in reality, I have no doubt it could be structured to cause major pain to the LCC's
If I was AA in court, I'd state the facts. "We at AA are forecasting a huge number of pilot retirements comprising of nearly 90% of our experienced Captains in the next 10 years, and the experience level of our First Officers before upgrading to Captain will drop significantly compared to historical levels, we see the Spirit Captains as an incredible resource in regards to experience in the exact same Airbus jets we fly with significant amounts of flying experience in the DFW and South Florida areas. We see this as a safety issue that will provide the highest levels of safety to our passengers.... blah blah blah."
(just hypothetical BS for the Court or a clueless jury, don't get your dander up as if it's something I personally believe in this situation)

I think they'd love to hire from the LCC but AA is tied to so many flows per class that the rest of the class of off the street hires are mostly made up of mil guys to keep the mix.
4 years ago when I first upgraded before the flow kicked in I flew with several JB and Spirit guys.
