I can't think of a single major airline pilot I know without a college degree. That should tell you something.
When American, United, Delta, Southwest, FedEx, and UPS have literally 10,000 apps on file, they get to be selective. HR needs a discriminator, and college degree seems to be an even bigger discriminatior than PIC time. That should tell you something as well.

I doubt it's 10000 anymore, probably around 5000 at this point.

True, however quite a few of them are considered geniuses. College and the degree were "beneath" their potential. And the ones I think you're referring to were also Harvard underclassmen. Not exactly run of the mill guys.
Others just happened upon a once in a lifetime idea, or design.
The rest of us working stiffs need some way to differentiate us.

Without revealing any identity or priveleged info, can you enlighten us?
How long ago? Was he on probation?
You can bet this: it just made the odds for any other non-degree applicant even more difficult.
Now it just indicates conformity and compliance, and possibly (with a good GPA), ability to learn. Maybe.
