I noticed one of my LinkedIn contacts just left AA after 9 years for FedEx. Now he didn’t leave for southwest and I’d agree FedEx is a far better choice if starting at AA but to give up 9 years seniority and as far as I know he lived in base so it’s got to be pretty bad at AA. I see very few scenarios where giving up nine years seniority makes sense aside from truly believing you’re on a sinking ship.

Mmmmm. Upgrade on the guppy in 10 years (with no other equipment choices) or upgrade in two years at AA or go widebody FO. The insane wave of retirements there IS your furlough protection and rapid seniority advancement.
Seriously, I can’t believe you’d even deliberate this. AA culture sucks. SWA culture has declined and continues to do so. The B737 cockpit sucks and will really wear on your nerves after a decade or two. Even if you stay narrowbody at AA, you have the comfy Fifi cockpit to look forward to.

I’ll give you that, HOWEVER they have what? Half the seniority list retiring in the next seven years? Again, as a person with CJOs for both AA & SWA, there’s no way I’d pick SWA *under the present circumstances*.

I’m trying to figure out what someone like that would have to gain by leaving. I really don’t see it makes sense especially if living in base. He could already be an AA captain with a decent schedule, so what’s motivating him? Toxic culture or fear of bankruptcy maybe? Sounds to me he may not be fully thinking it through

After hearing all of it he finally gets convinced that making this move will finally make him happy. Until he leaves and realizes he didn’t have it as bad as everyone convinced him it was.

He’s probably flying with lots of people like you who talk about the negatives and how “this place will be shutting its doors soon”.

It’s a whole different story if you’re already at captain and have been flying people for decade or longer. Pilots like to joke about boxes don’t complain, but someone with as many years at AA really can’t use that line.
But we all have our wants and needs. Perhaps in his eyes he would be happier. I wouldn’t be surprised if people were getting in his head as well as seeing all the doomsday news about AA and its meltdowns.
